stay a 3rd year at ccc?

hey everyone
its been really bugging me about whether or not i should stay a 3rd year at my ccc
i want to transfer to ucsb, sdsu, or cal poly slo ideally as a bio major but my GPA is only a 3.1 WILL get it to a 3.2 this fall semester i am DETERMINED and i wont have all the pre reqs from assist done...by the end of this coming spring semester(2011) i will only have my
chem series(B,C),
ochem series,
bio series (C havent started the other two),
English(B,A),
and calc done..
i WONT have physics done or statistics which some schools say i need
i have also done
history(A) and human sexuality(B) and pre calc(A)
so i guess what im asking is do i have any shot at those schools or should i stay a third year at ccc to boost my GPA and get more classes done or should i apply this fall?

If you are missing certain pre-reqs you won’t get in, but since it only costs a nominal amount of money and time you can always give it a swing this year and then reapply if it doesn’t work out.

A 3.1 is on the low side for the colleges you have listed. You are missing some pre-reqs. Make sure you have a college-level math done by the time required (as stated by each college)… otherwise that is usually at automatic reject.

Sounds like a 3rd year of CCC is in your future, but if you have the extra cash for applications there is no problem in applying this year.

yeah i have my college math done and got an A
finished my two english classes and got a B and A
so im just finishing up bio and ochem…
i guess my question was more rooted at whether i should go all out this fall semester:
ochem
bio 1b
calc
and try to get atleast two A’s and one B or straight A’s so that i can have a shot when i apply
OR
if i should drop one of the classes so that i can for sure get A’s in 2 classes and take the other class some other time in my third year…spread out my course load and maybe bump up my GPA? it was a 3.4 until i got 2 C’s but there is really nothing i can think of to improve it other than stay longer to take more classes…
but i REALLY wanted to transfer out for fall 2011

No kidding, everyone want to transfer after 2 years of CC. No one I know wanted to stay at CC the third year. Like “annikasorrensen” said, it worth a try to apply this Fall, if it does not work out then stay the third year.

I actually also going to try to apply this Fall as well to UCSD. I also behind 2 classes of pre-reqs, chem and phys. I got GPA of 3.26 after I took 2 classes in summer. This is also a question I wanted to ask for awhile:

What happen if you are behind pre-reqs? Do you take it after you transfer?

One thing I know for sure is if you behind your pre-reqs, it going to be a hell of a year after you transfer.

@uhpol - if you have transfer math done, have at least 60 units, and have all critical transfer classes done or in progress, then your biggest challenge is GPA. 3.1 is just not competitive for the schools you listed and thus admission will be based on whether or not you make the cut. It certainly is possible but not a sure thing. I guess go for it. Will your Fall grades be posted BEFORE you apply to the UCs/CSUs? Last I knew the apps were due in November, long before grades were posted–thus your transfer GPA for admission is based on what you have right now.

@Ktran13 Assuming the missing pre-reqs aren’t required for transfer and you get accepted, yes, you take them after you transfer. The thing to note is sometimes it is better to stay that 3rd year at CCC… certainly cheaper than if the student gets stuck taking extra time at the UC where it is much more expensive!

In general, in today’s UC/CSU climate, it is best to have a solid GPA and all your pre-reqs done. There are less spots than before and competition is higher than ever. Even ho-hum CSUs have become very competitive–I know someone with a 3.3 transfer GPA (all pre-reqs done) turned down from San Jose State University.

Unlike UCs, CSUs have service areas which are usually the county they are located in and sometimes adjacent counties if they have no CSU. Impacted CSUs like San Jose State as well as SDSU and Cal Poly SLO are extremely difficult to get into if you are applying from outside their service area. If you are applying from the service areas of these schools a 3.1 might get you in but if you are outside their service areas your chances are not good.

i guess i can always try and then plan for the 3rd year…
whats the average it takes 2 years?? or is 3 pretty common too?
it wouldnt hurt cause im young so if i waited id be 20 when i transferred so i wouldnt be super old compared to everyone else…
anyone out there transfer after 3 years? how was it?

I don’t mean this badly but assuming you maintain a 3.2 GPA, you probably won’t get into either SLO or SDSU. UCSB is still kind of a long shot (unless you can TAG in). I would stay a 3rd year and take more IGETC classes that could bring up your GPA…

WIth your curriculum, a 3rd year is very common. I am transferring to UCSD after three years at a CC. So far I’m not bumming it. I mean I finished all my prereqs and have only two years to go…

Don’t feel bad about taking a 3rd year, I’ve had to take a 4th year mostly due to ignorance of the transfer protocol and issues related to the schools themselves.
07-08 - SBCC (Online)
08-09 SBCC (Online) / WVC (In person)
09-10 WVC (In person)
10-11 WVC (In Person/Transfering)

Basically I tried twice to get down to SB and failed and the school kinda screwed me saying if I took 12 credits between the two colleges, my Pell Grant wouldn’t be cut… of course by then it was too late to change it to a diff school anyway but eh. Anyway don’t feel too badly about it, for me it’s actually working out well because I’ll have about 100 semester credits and enough to get 2-4 AA degrees. Take that 3rd year and kick that GPA’s butt up there as high as you can get it. If it helps, my GPA’s essentially around the same level (3.4 WVC 2.9 SBCC ((don’t ask)), together they average out to about 3.2 and will be insanely higher once I do an academic renewal to remove two bad grades). I’m still mostly in the running for UCLA but only because I’m TAPing and after one more year my GPA will be around 3.7 (hopefully)

thanks guys im motivated even more now
yeah i think a 3rd year is best especially cause i reallly wanna go to ucsb so i need to up my chances to have the best shot at getting in

If that’s what you have to do then stay for another year. I love every single year at CC because of relaxing and less competitive environment. Going from CCC to UC will be a big stress if you still have load of elective and preq to take :)

persistence is key! stay another year if it dsnt work out. dude, im prolly going to have to stay another year [4 total] haaaaaaaa :expressionless: real talk tho. u can get a job by third year if manage yourself and time will go by fast.
