Stay another year, or just apply to transfer in the fall?

Hey guys, a little background first.

My major is Computer Science, and I currently have a 3.2 GPA.
I'm looking to transfer to the following schools:
UC Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Riverside, and LA as well as some Cal States.
I don't really have a preference as to where I'd like to go, but obviously I'd take a UC over a Cal State.

With the way my schedule is set up right now, I would not be able to finish the following courses prior to transfer:

Math 171 - wanted by UC Irvine, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal State Fullerton
Biol 101 - wanted by Riverside, Long Beach, Pomona, Fullerton
Physics 223 - wanted by Cal Poly Pomona, Davis, Santa Barbara, Riverside

So my question is this: should I stay an extra semester and finish absolutely every course listed on the school's website/assist.org so that these schools don't have an 'excuse' to deny me?

I ask because I've seen people get accepted regardless of whether they finished all of the courses the school wanted, and I've also seen people denied because they didn't finish just 1 course.

Thank you!

Edit: I also wouldn't be taking CIS 226 and CIS 228 because those courses aren't offered at my school anymore (it's Java I and Java II). The schools that want these are Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Irvine.
However, I heard that if my CC isn't offering a course, the UC/Cal State wouldn't hold it against you when you apply.

What are the names of the classes? The numbers don’t tell me much since I don’t go to your college.

Math 171 - Discrete Mathematics
Math 172 - Linear Algebra
Biol 101 - Biology
Physics 223 - 3rd semester physics (Thermodynamics)
CIS 226 - Java I
CIS 228 - Java II

One mistake I made this year was not finishing my major prerequisites. Not doing so got me rejected by UCB and UCLA. Colleges like to see major preparation especially if the major is impacted. UCB, UCLA, and UCs that have computer science as an impacted major are very strict about it. However, I did get into UCSB, UCI and UCSB with only 1 major prerequisite finished. I say it doesn’t hurt to try, and if you fail then try again.

Yeah, but if I don’t get in that’s money basically wasted. What was your GPA, jackielion?

You have a 3.2 right? Im guessing you arent trying for UCLA or UCB. Id say go for it you have a good chance at TAG’ing to a good school. You can finish your classes once you transfer they dont make a huge deal out of 3 classes.

Im missing like 6 pre reqs and I still got into UCR (though they revoked me for dropping a class this semester but if i didnt drop it id still have it) and ucsb.

How many years have you been at the cc?

What will you be taking in place of Java 1 and 2? Will you have other CS courses such as computer architecture, data structures, and discrete structures finished?

You could always apply if you’re willing to part with some money and see whether you get accepted.

If you qualify for the fee waiver then I think you can apply to 4 ucs without paying a single penny. I’d try to apply this fall anyways. If anything, you should call the UCs. UCSB was the most helpful in my opinion. I called them about a required calc class that I wanted to drop and they told me that it was ok to take it after transferring. It all depends on the schools. Good luck and keep us updated!

@damiansevren: I’ve been here for 5 years, but my first 2 were figuring out what I wanted to do - I chose history, but when it came down to actually transferring, I decided to change to Computer Science.

@derse4444: Yes, by the time I transfer I’ll have Data Structures as well as Assembly done.

@kayvuvu: I did call the UCs. They basically said this following: I can apply without finishing all of my pre-requisite classes, but they can still deny me for that reason.

Not to sound like a dick but if you stay another year that will mean you’ll have spent 8 years just trying to get your bachelors. When you transfer you’ll still only be transfering in as a junior and they’ll pick 70 units (usually pre req) to transfer with you.

You claimed you’re only going to be missing 3 pre reqs right? Im sure you’ll be fine. However check assist.org and read the first page and see if any of them are mandatory that could prevent your acceptance. Like I stated I was missing about 6 pre reqs for UCR and I still got accepted into their Bio program (which is heavily impacted). And ucsb. So I think youd be fine if you applied.

My friend going into computer engineering, missing 3 pre-reqs (he had a 3.8), resulted in him getting denied to Davis, Irvine, San Diego, Cal, and UCLA. He did get into UCSB.
