Stay another year?

Hello everyone!

I am currently going through the appeal process for UCSD UCLA and UCB as an English Major for a technical error. However, this whole mess has got me thinking that perhaps if it does not work out I should stay an extra year at my CC and change my major. I will seek advise from my counselor, but first wanted to ask all of you. I am definitely tired of English and planned on trying to switch to Comm at the UC's, (Media Studies for UCB), with a minor in Biology OR ideally to Human Bio major because it is what I am really interested, with a minor in Comm. Considering that human bio is a stacked major I still may be able to complete it within a year, in time to apply next year as a transfer once again. BUT that means staying an extra year! I took three years off of school when I graduated to work, returned as part-time for the first year and took two years as full-time. So basically it would be my fourth, (seriously I cringe at the thought of this!). I have already been accepted as a Comm major to Emerson and am awaiting reply from SC as a Comm major.

Should I stay a year and attempt a Major in Human Bio, minor in Comm. OR
transfer and attempt a Major in Comm, minor in Human Bio/ Major in Human Bio, minor in Comm.

PLEASE give me your opinion! No hurt feelings, I really need some feedback!

If you don’t get through with the appeals then sure why not? Have you got into any other school aside from Emerson? If you get into SC then I’d go for it. SC is a good school.

If you have taken an economics course you would have encountered the idea of sunk costs. Sunk costs are said to be irrelevant for decision-making. Applied here it means that the time you spent so far doesn’t matter; you can’t get it back. I can understand your frustration at seeing the years go by and wanting to be done with school. But the way to think about one more year is whether or not spending that year is worth it in order to major in what you want, not how many years it has taken you to get to where you are today.

Since you are looking at three UC schools you might want to make a matrix to make sure your plan would be viable at each of them. For example UCLA does not offer a minor in either biology or communications. And as far as switching into communications at UCLA, they say it is a very competitive major to get into. They don’t prohibit transfers from switching into it like economics does, at least they don’t say so on their web page. But you might want to contact the department and ask how feasible it would be.
