I attended a cc for two years where i finished all of my igetc and general education. At the time i was unsure as to my major so i did not aim my classes to one specific subject. Because of family circumstances i was unable to attend the university of my choice after my second year; therefore, i am currently attending the cc in my home town. I know that a biology major is what i want to major in at UCSD. My problem is that i have not taken all the major requirements for that impacted major. I will be applying to UCSD this nov. for Fall 2011 admission under physical anthropology, but i was wondering if i get in under that major would i be able to take the biology major pre-reqs and eventually switch majors? would it be worth it? I know staying at a junior college and finishing those requirements would be cheaper, but i can't be at a cc for a 4th and 5th year. I feel like I am getting penalized for not knowing exactly what i want at 20 years old! HELP!

Well how many pre-reqs are you missing in BIO compared to physical anth? Are the pre-reqs similar/overlap? If so, that will help you out a lot. I have been talking with my uncle about this same situation, because I’m at my first application cycle and hope to get into my school of choice, but maybe not my choice major. He went to Cal Poly SLO and said it will depend a lot on the faculty and who you can get to help you switch majors. If you are able to get those lower division classes out of the way and pull some strings with admin. then you have a really good shot. Other than that its hit or miss really and will depend on your specific situation.

May I ask what you want to persude as a biology major? I’m wondering because Biology majors almost always go into graduate schools, because of the limited work oppurtunies with just a B.S.
I was in your situtation last year; I had wanted to going to pharmacy school after my undergrad., so I had wanted really bad to be a bio. major. I didn’t have all the pre-reqs done so I was stuck. I asked around, and it turns out sticking with my orginal major, English, and minoring in Biology would prepare me more than enough for Pharmacy school. The great part about minoring is you do not need to put it down on your application.
Just my 2 cents, I hope this helps.

hanks for the post guys! I attended Cuesta, the JC in San Luis Obispo and considered going to Cal Poly for a long time. In the end i wanted to be closer to home. But i have been told especially at Cal Poly that switching majors is very difficult. I know that physical anthropology will slightly overlap biology requirements but not entirely. And i have spoken to counselors from UCSD that told me minoring in Biology would be near impossible because the major is already so impacted. I want to be a nurse, but i don’t want to get my AA in nursing and transfer after because that would take another 2 years at a Junior College. Therefore i am just trying to find the best major option to get my bachelors in so after i can be prepared for nursing school. I know in the end it will all work out, I’m just seriously anal and need a set 10 year plan. lol

Ah okay, sorry to hear that biology is so impacted at UCSD. Anyway, I wish you luck with your future goals!
