Hello I am a freshman starting my first semester and majoring as a software engineer. I was thinking of transferring out of SJSU to CC. The reason is because I commute daily from Oakland so traffic and barely any parking is making me stressful. My class schedule is full from Monday to Friday, but thinking of dropping a class so I would only go Mon, Wed, and Fri. Dropping a class would result from 15 units to 11 units.
Also I was thinking after CC I would go to SFSU, but I heard their computer science program isn’ t that great. So I was thinking of doing my GE’s at CC then transferring back to SJSU or transfer to SFSU.
I plan to attend Laney Community college if I were to transfer out.
Does anyone have suggestions for me?
Does it matter what CSU you go to?
Can anyone confirm how computer science program is like at SFSU?
Would taking BART to Warm Springs / South Fremont and then the VTA 181 bus to SJSU be easier than driving and parking? You could try reading, studying, or resting riding the BART and bus which you cannot do while driving.
Also, doesn’t SJSU require frosh from beyond 30 miles from campus to live on campus, except for various categories of mostly non-traditional students?
I had an emergency circumstances that required me not to live on campus. I was considering bart but that’s nearly 2 hours to travel from Oakland to SJSU.
So I’m thinking about going to CC then coming back so that I can just finish the GE courses or attend a different CSU. But since SJSU is known for engineering/comp. sci, I feel like I would waste an opportunity by transferring to CC next semester.
Have you used ParkStash? The app was designed by an SJSU student to find parking in driveways from homeowners.
Yea I used ParkStash, but I have classes near 12pm and 1:30pm, but garages are full and park and ride is full too.
Looks like about 1:40 by BART and the VTA 181 bus, versus a variable time between 1:00 and 1:50 for driving. For this comparison, BART and the VTA 181 bus look like an obvious winner – for driving, you need to leave earlier to account for the worst case traffic and parking, and you cannot do anything else like read or rest while driving.
You’re in a situation where something has to give. Either you’re going to have to move close® to campus or wind up at a school that’s not as desirable. Perhaps you can get a deferment until you resolve your logistics, as SJSU is indeed a good school for CS. Anything greater than say 75 minutes commuting time whether by public transit or by car is going to get old within a month or so.
Another option, if you’ve got the will and brainpower, might be to transfer to Laney and see if you can transfer to Berkeley in a couple of years.
