Staying on the Meal Plan 2nd Year?

As a second year, I am wondering if it is worth it to stay on the meal plan. Last semester, I was on Plus 10, and while I used my plus dollars, I only ate between 5-7 meals a week. My main concern is that I will miss the social aspect of eating with friends in the dining halls. However, as an upperclassman, I am unsure if my friends will even be frequenting the dining halls as much. Upperclassmen, what has been your experience?

You don’t save any money by having a meal plan. You can get a semester 80 if you want, but it’s a huge waste of money if you don’t use all of the meals. I would recommend just paying per meal for the fall, and if you commonly end up at the dining hall then get a plan. As far as plus dollars, you save money because there is no tax, but if you’re wasting meals to do that, you’re not going to save money. You might find that going to the Corner is just as convenient now anyways!

FWIW I had a meal plan all 4 years, since Brown requires one. I used it for lunch frequently. I only had ~$100 (plus dollars) 4th year and I would go through that pretty quickly, and I would just order from Campusfood with my roommate or go to the Corner or get something on my way home and it was fine with me. I was out a lot working, student teaching, etc so I had my car most nights and I hate Newcomb dinners anyways so I never ate that. So I had the 80 or 100 meals a semester, I forget, but it worked well. I always had extra meals but you had to have a plan in Brown and I loved eating lunch and brunch there so eh what can you do? HTH

Have I ever mentioned that I like that you all can switch your meal plans if the one you’re on isn’t working for you?

When I was in school, you were stuck with the plan you picked for the entire year. No exceptions. :)
