Sticky Situation for a Junior

Hey y’all!

I am writing here because I am generally concerned for my college prospects. I am from the United States Virgin Islands, but unfortunately this year we experienced two category 5 hurricanes. (Hurricanes Irma & Maria) My home took a lot of damage and as a result my family had to relocate to the mainland United States.

School started in the states two months before school started in the Virgin Islands and as a result I had a late start at my new school. The guidance counselor at the new school also didn’t let me take any AP classes because of this, so as a result my resume looks somewhat dry.

After a few months of living in the states, I moved back to the Virgin Islands. My GPA is about a 3.5, and I am confident that I can get my SAT score to a 1300. My dream school is USF. Do I still have a chance of getting into a decent school, or should I throw in the towel?

I am grateful for any input on the matter!

You have faced adversity that few people will ever come close to experiencing, I am certain your extenuating circumstances will not be a huge disadvantage. I would have your guidance counselor write a letter explaining your situation, or you could write your essay about the hardships you have faced.

Your guidance counselor can talk about it and you can put your story either in your essay or in your additional information section. You should definitely keep at it! Like anyone, have safety and match schools that you would be delighted to attend.
