Stolen Bikes

Should I be worried about my bike getting stolen at college? Is theft something kids with bikes actually worry about or is it not that big of a deal?

Depends on your rims bro.

Buy a lock.

Get a lock.

Would you let an item that belongs to you and is worth $100-$500 sit unprotected in an area with high person-traffic?

Yeah…really…buy a lock, buy two if you are that paranoid, hell buy three and REALLY **** someone trying to steal your bike.

Google Sheldon browns lock system. It’s a two lock system that uses a u-lock to lock your rear tire to frame and a cable to lock your frame to your front tire to the bike rack. It won’t get stolen because chances are there will be a bike near by with one lock which a thief would rather attack. It’s about 30 bucks for a cable and u-lock combo, well worth it.

If you have a really nice bike, spray paint it so it looks like crap, so no one will want to steal it.

I personally believe that bike theft is more of a concern than a reality. People will however steal your seat if you have a really nice one, or your pump, so dont leave one on there. Of course your school may be different, especially if it is in an urban area where homeless people roam the campus. You will want to lock it up, just any old lock will do though.

It really depends on the area. I know at my undergrad school bike theft was rampant, even if you spray painted it the ugliest colors known to man. At my current school I’d say it’s 50/50 between u-locks and chain locks and bike theft doesn’t seem to be nearly as much of a problem.

Then again, most people I know with nice bikes are grad students and either keep them in their office/lab or in the hallway instead of locking it up behind a building.

Obviously I have a lock. I’m referring to how often locks get cut, tires stolen, seats stolen, etc goes on. I think I’m just going to cover up all the brand logos so they can’t tell what’s what.

1 crime at UC Davis is bike theft. Not sure if it’s nearly as rampant at other schools.
