$16,00/year or total?
Per year! We were shocked but happy.
If you live in CA, why would you apply to state schools in NY?
Santa Barbara, Irvine, San Diego, and Davis are all similar and you would get in-state tuition.
She has also applied to NYU, Fordham, St. John’s and Syracuse. She really wants to go to school in NY. I told her to cast a wide net. She has also applied to the UC’s out here. They are extremely competitive based on sheer numbers of applicants. UCLA had over 100,000 last year. We are keeping all options open. Isn’t Stony Brook a great school?
(My opinion only) Fordham, Stony, and Syracuse are all pretty good schools, just not worth traveling 3000 miles for. Every state has schools of equivalent caliber to these schools.
If she traveled to NY for NYU, that is understandable.
My opinion is that living 3000 miles away from home, in a completely different environment, is an awesome experience. My son goes to UPENN and living in Philly has been amazing for him. He’s had a chance to live in a big city, with completely different weather, architecture, food, culture, etc.
With all do respect - Comparing UPenn and Stony is like comparing a Maserati and a Camry.
I realize that this is a Stony thread. Don’t murder me for saying that.
With all due respect to you, we were talking about moving 3,000 miles, not the university itself.
No, I said that the university determines if traveling 3000 miles is justified (IMO obviously).
I do not wish to escalate. This was just my opinion, that’s it.
I understand that, not trying to escalate.
hi guys i have a quick question for anyone who is applying to uni scholars. i already did the supplemental essay and indicated on my app that i want to be apart of it, but on the website it says this: “In order to apply, please send an email containing a resumé, and letter of intent (indicating why you want to join the Program, what you believe you can bring to it, and what you hope to get out of it) to jeremy.marchese@stonybrook.edu.” I already put my resume on my app and did anyone do this step already?!!? i just found out about it now.
My daughter applied to Stony Brook’s WISE, which is has the same requirements as other two honors programs. She included her resume with the Common App. She then uploaded the essays in the SBU Portal. The teachers/counselors submitted LoRs separately.
From what I understand, to apply to Honors you will need:
- Indicate interest in Application or supplement
- Ask teachers and/or counselors to submit evaluation or LoRs.
- Upload resume.
- Upload Why you believe you will be a good fit for your honors program." essay.
I’m looking at the portal now and not seeing what you saw. Maybe you need to reach out to “jeremy.marchese@stonybrook.edu” for more info specific to your application.
Good luck !!!
Prospective Students | University Scholars it says it here in the 3rd paragraph and its specific to uni scholars. It is my backup and my first choice is the honors college so I’m unsure if this step is required. I did everything you listed. Im just kinda worried about this because i just found out.
The deadline is Feb 1st for Honors supplement, so it doesn’t hurt to send the documents to the email you indicated above.
looking back at the website I realized I read it wrong lol. That step only applies to current SBU students. But thanks for the help!!!
did anyone just get an email from stony brook saying their application is under evaluation and you will get a decision by april 1st? is this a deferral?
i got that like 2 weeks ago. sbu decisions are rolling but everyone should get an answer by April first. it’s possibly to get it before that date too which is what rolling means. if you got deferred the word “deferred” would have been in the email. no need to worry!
So if we haven’t received that email yet, does that mean that it’s still waiting to be evaluated? Applied end of October! Told it was complete.
I applied mid November and they emailed me two weeks ago with the subject as “Update on ur App status” and the contents were as followed: “ Thank you for applying to Stony Brook University. This email is to inform you that your academic documentation for your application to the University has been received.” I feel like if you haven’t received that email yet then they haven’t seen your app yet. At the same time my portal updated saying they have my documentation and my app is under review by the committee and when they come to a decision.
