I got into both Stony Brook and Fordham. Financially, if i commute to fordham vs staying on campus at stony brook, it will cost me the same. Which school has better research facilities available? Which school has more people being accepted into medical school? What are your views about weeding out pre-meds and grade deflation at each school. Also, where should i attend college? I like both schools, i am confused and need help deciding.

For research/pre-medical sciences, Stony Brook. Hands down.

With all due respect, DJ, you present an opinion and not an established fact that Stony Brook is “superior” to Fordham for “research/pre-med sciences” at the undergraduate level. But the fact is that Fordham University pre-med has a very high rate of success in getting its graduates into medical school. Likewise, opportunities for Fordham undergraduates to do original research in the physical sciences abound, not the least of which includes work at Fordham’s Calder environmental lab.

In overall undergraduate ratings, moreover, Fordham University currently holds a much higher rank than does Stony Brook in such publications as the US News college rankings, due to Fordham’s strong humanities departments, and probably the halo-effect of its top-tier law school.

I am neither a Fordham graduate nor affliated with it in any way. In fact, my daughter actually chose to attend Stony Brook, and my wife and I are thrilled over her decision.

We would have been happy should she, our daughter, had chosen Fordham University, an institution that is well-established, academically demanding, and moving up the academic ratings.

So why the dispute? First, I don’t think you have given a response that is either fair or strongly supported, all things considered.

But I also believe you have missed what makes Stony Brook truly a school worth considering:

What Stony Brook has over Fordham is a more evidently innovative approach to integrating hard sciences into emerging industries and disciplines for the new century. While Fordham is dedicated toward breaking into the big three of elite American Catholic university’s (Georgetown, Boston College, and Notre Dame), as well as further truly securing its place as an unquestioned member of New York City’s elite academic constellation (Columbia University, New York University), Stony Brook University is staking out its own unique place both among elite state universities and New York’s comprehensive research centers. Stony Brook is not merely interested in securing its place among established elite schools, which is what Fordham has committed itself to achieving.

Rather, Stony Brook is interested in redefining just what an elite, comprehensive research university actually achieves in the service of the society in the new century.

This is what gives Stony Brook, in our view, its exciting promise.

Farber - of course my post reflects my opinion. I’m here, as an alumnus, to encourage students to attend my alma mater. My opinion will, 99% of the time, point prospects towards Stony Brook.

My assessment of the scientific research program at SB is based upon personal experiences compared to those of my peers at institutions of similar caliber.

For sciences, I would pick Stony. Science facilities at Fordham are terrible.
