It seems to be that they are pretty much on par with each other academically in the engineering department, but it also seems that Stony is the more well-known school. Does that mean Stony has the better companies coming to recruit students in comparison to Stony Brook?

Looking at Buffalo's companies that recruited (Undergraduate Placement Information - 2009) the list doesn't seem so impressive. While Stony doesn't have a survey for the engineering employment, the little employment statistics they have show their graduates getting into great companies out of school.

I'd really like to work in a stable prosperous company out of school instead of a random 3rd rate one where my job is always on the line.

Company size/stability has less to do with your job being on the line. In the world of defense contracting, a large company can lose jobs just like a so-called “3rd rate”. On defense contracts, you have prime contractors and subcontractors. That “3rd rate” employer COULD be a subcontractor for Lockheed who just happened to outbid Boeing and CSC on an existing contract. Now Boeing is out the door and Lockheed takes over (and their subcontractors).

Here at the No Such Agency, we have a small woman-owned primarily Java-developer company that has PRIMED contracts for over 15 years.

Research the smaller companies on more than just size.

That list didn’t look too bad. There are two big-time companies in my field listed on it that are considered among the best (Turner Construction and Kiewit & Sons).

Stony Brook undergrad is having a drug problem right now…My S has friends at both in engineering, the one at UB is very happy and doing well. The one at SB is meeting the above stereotype.

Bump. Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I’ve having the Buffalo vs Stony dilemma too and this is one of the factors that I can’t get any clarity about. (Job Placement)

I think I’m liking Stony Brook over UB right now (figuring out where I’m going next year). For BME they are ranked number 1 for suny school and are very highly ranked for engineering in general. Top 2% in the world in general. Top 100 for sciences in the world. Top 25 in North America and Top 10 among public universities according to the dean of CEAS. Plus they have the Center for Wireless and Information Technology, Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, NYS Office of Science Tech. and Academic Research Center for Biomedical Diagnostics and Therapeutics, and last but definitely not least- the Brookhaven National Labratory.

I think I’ve made up my mind. I like the location and the BME curriculum.

If anyone has any other info, please share.

It would seem that proximity to population centers would make it easier for employers to recruit at Stonybrook. I’m in the Greater Boston area and Stonybrook definitely has better name recognition.

It depends on your major. If you are interested in Computer Science, then it’s a known fact that UB isn’t on the same tier as Stony Brook. Remember that Stony is a Science school, and it’s research expenditure is unparalleled amongst it’s SUNY peers.

In short, comparing UB to Stony Brook is nothing short but an insult to humanity. Don’t believe me? Look up Brookhaven National Lab, CEWIT, Cold Spring Harbors lab, and that’s not including the research the university does within it’s own premises. With nearly 70 faculty members in the CSE department alone, comparing Stony Brook to Columbia is a better comparison. Don’t get me wrong, UB is a good school, but it’s not on the same level as Stony. UB doesn’t manage one of the few national labs in the country, nor does it conduct research, or have as many resources as Stony Brook. Not to mention, with respect to ranking of your major, SBU is ranked far higher.

If you were interested in Civil Engineering, I would’ve recommended you UB. But CS, or CpE, going to UB would be like a smack in your face. There is a reason Google, Microsoft actively recruit at SBU. The program is well known, as the posted above me mentioned.

I rest my case, go with the home of the MRI.
