HI,
I recently got accepted into the WISE Program at Stony Brook. I originally applied for Scholars in Med, but I was not accepted/chosen for interview. Although I did interview for other BS/MD programs & am waiting on some undergrad results, Stony, specifically WISE, is pretty high on my list of colleges, so I just wanted to get a little bit more insight about the school and the program.
1. How many people generally get accepted/matriculate to the WISE Program?
2. How is the dorming, food, and student life like at Stony?
3. Is it hard to find research or internship opportunities at Stony? (I would like to pursue a career in Medicine)
4. I heard that there are hundreds of kids in classes, so is it hard to maintain a high GPA, generally?
5. Can someone please explain in depth about the WISE program, aside from whats said on the official website.
I am only asking to get a good scope about the college because picking the right one is a serious decision!
Thanks a lot!! :)

hi, i am a parent of a kid who goes/dorms at stony brook…his dorm floor is below some of the wise participants…the dorm is corridor style room with either one or sometimes 2 roommates, there is one bathroom with about 3-4 showers and about 5-6 stalls that the floor uses…the one gripe I would have is that there are no hooks in the shower area…each shower is private (curtain) and has a small dressing area and then you step over a low divider into the shower. the floors of the dorm are divided boys floor, girls floor…the rooms are carpeted (decent) there are alot of choices for food all around campus, there’s many different ehtnic foods, chinese, italian, wendys, salads, kosher, starbucks, i think they are bringing in a froyo (red mango) shop too…alot of students do go home on weekends, but my kid stays most weekends and says that there are things to do, plus easier to study…kid is in first year (2nd semester) and has a job already on campus as well as 2 friends from HS also found jobs…they are involved with club sports (frisbee, soccer, etc) the recreation ctr is great and brand new. First year, math and science lecture classes are big 300+ students…but they have recitation (study) classes for those classes that are only about 30 students and the lab classes are small about 20-25; the prof do hold extra study classes prior to mid terms and office hours, etc…since you were accepted to wise i think you’ll do fine academically…you just need to go and visit the school to see if you’d to go there. I would call the WISE advisor and set up an interview with her…maybe she’d intorduce you to some of the students that are in the program…and answer your specific questions about the program…my kid is in univer scholars, and alot or most of the social events/mixes are coordinated between the three honor programs (WISE, Honors College and Uni Scholars); so you meet a large group of students that are academically similar and then you also meet different students in your classes…the other classes besides the big mandatory math and science classes are rather small in size 25-30 students (such as englishes, humanities, etc) and your req’d major courses might be small too, depending on your major. Hope this helps!

My D got admitted into WISE program into Bio-Medical Engineering. She wants to pursue pre-med. Is Stonybrook good for that.?
And also I am confused. What is the difference between WISE, Honors College and Uni Scholars

Please advice.

thanks
psr251

hi psr251…according to my kid bio-medical eng (BME) is the hardest major on campus, also has more credit req’mts (so told by kid)…but ur d got accepted into wise, i’m sure she’ll do great!! I really don’t know what the differences are between three program…maybe scholarship $$ and how many slots each program has…Also, the honors college is noted on diploma…I would definitely call the WISE adviser and talk to her about all your questions…also, contact the BME Undergrad chairperson and talk to them about the major…so far, my kid loves SBU!! has made friends, joined organizations, gone to concerts and events and is really enjoying it there.

thank you, @chocmilk ! Very helpful, as I’m getting the last of my decisions this week/next week, I’ll definitely use this in consideration. Thank you so much:)

April will probably be the most stressful in this whole college choice game, lol. Ask lots of questions…and remember to also consider finances, if need be. Look at the different programs carefully and also the faculty and course catalog (does the school offer a lot of different classes???)

Does being accepted to WISE offer additional scholarships?
