“I love how if somebody had said “only blacks and latinos care about drugs and gang activity” there would have been an enormous outrage on this thread, but stereotyping asians is just fine, because apparently politically correctness only extends to certain minorities. and in spite of all that, blacks and latinos still apparently deserve AA because they are “discriminated against” and subjected to stereotyping.. irony to the extreme.”

i don’t think ixjunitxi was stereotyping asians, i think he/she was saying that some of the asian kids would be upset about the kid’s rejection because they believe it happened because of AA. i don’t know of many blacks or latinos who are upset about reaping the benefits of AA, but i know plenty of asians who gripe about it screwing up their chances for admission. therefore, it would “make sense” that more asians than blacks/latinos would complain about the kid’s rejection-they (the asian kids) might feel that it is a very real injustice; one that they might have to deal with, too… oh, and i think legendofmax’s post was quite insightful.

With all this argument about affirmative action, I think we are overlooking the real enemy of meritocracy in college admissions: the legacy benefit.

As its wrong on 2 fronts in the sense that it says AA doesn’t exist, and in the sense that anyone is or is not getting in on their own merits. Nobody gets in “on their own merits” because college is not a meritocracy.

^^^
everyone who gets in is qualified though. so what’s the big deal? problem is that, at top schools, there are just way too many qualified applicants.

Johnson181: I’m not saying you should “be quiet” over anything that you think is bad, but whining about how AA is going to get you rejected from Harvard is just stupid. I’m also not saying that AA is good or bad, and that it’s not worth something to stand up for. I’m saying don’t use AA as an excuse for why you think you won’t get into an Ivy or another top-tier school. If AA exists, then work harder to overcome it. That’s the best way to beat it.
