Storage facilities near Rice

Since we live in New Hampshire and my son will be flying home for the summer, we're thinking about getting a storage unit for his non-essential "stuff." Considering the Houston climate, I'm thinking a climate controlled unit would be preferable. Does anyone familiar with the Houston area have suggestions on facilities that are not too far from the Rice campus? His college does have storage in the basement, but from what I understand, you don't want to store anything there that you care about. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think there's someplace nearby off of highway 59, but I'm not exactly sure.

I know there is a Public Storage, a Shurguard, and a Storage USA...I have looked into it a bit, and they are all close in price - Storage USA seems to be the cheapest for me by about $5. It looks to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $75 for the summer for a 5x5 unairconditioned unit. If you find something that looks good, pass it on!

All of these companies have websites where you can see the locations and find their phone numbers.

Storage is going to be a hassle though...

D was able to store a TON of stuff in the basement of her college last summer. It was an absolute mess- with people's sofas thrown on top of other people's boxes, but at least it was free! This summer she can't do that because she is living off campus next year. (anxious mom here) Check with your college about storage. And keep important things elevated- there is occasional flooding in the dorm basements.

*it's weird that the dorm even has a basement; most things here are built without basements just because of flooding. None in houses here.

Just because of the flooding issue, as well as the "mess," that's why we're leaning towards renting a unit. Jenskate, thanks for the name of the 3 places. It appears that for a 5 x 5 climate controled unit, Shurguard is the cheapest at $29 per month. The other two you mentioned were both around $55 per month for the same size. I'm surprised there is such a big difference in price. Kind of makes you wonder...

Yes, but many of them have special deals, see, like first month free, etc. I think Public Storage had first month for a dollar, and Storage USA had first month free. Plus Storage USA had a deal where if you were a first time renter they'd give you a $25 Visa card. Look carefully.

Google and see if Marvin Zindler (strange, scary news guy with purple tinted glasses) turned up anything bad about storage places. Usually he focuses on places with unsanitary food and kids who need money for medical problems, but sometimes he branches out.

Hey, I love Marvin Zindler.

I do too, didn't say anything bad about him :) And he seriously might have investigated storage facilities.

Marvin Zindler's name on a college forum, I never saw it coming:D

He's just awesome... It's that slime in the ice machine!

It's not really a basement, but it is slightly below ground (at least at D's college). You go down a few steps to get to the storage area.
