Summer Storage

Does Rice have any facilities for storing personal items over the summer? If not, are there any self-storage facilities nearby where a student could stash his fridge, microwave, TV, bulky linens, etc.?

Since you live in the same college all four years, most of the colleges are able to open up storage space for you over the summer. It's really nice to be able to do that, since most of my friends at other schools have to find off-campus storage.

Hanszen had this dungeon where kids could store things. The early loaders got their things in the space nice and neat, and then later kids just tossed stuff in on top. When we arrived back in August to try to claim D's sofa and boxes, it was a disaster. Engineer H about had a heart attack at the total chaos. It took hours before D's stuff could even be uncovered. But, hey, at least it stayed in Houston for the summer!!!

MOWC-
The basement has some enearing name, but I've temporarily forgotten it. Not only does the basemet get crammed with stuff, but soemtimes rain has caused a "bit" of a problem. But, DS has stored his stuff with no ill effects!

rain actually has destroyed much. there is no real summer storage at Rice. Common spaces alotted to residentail colleges are used - but not designed for or meant to be used for summer storage.

Like a lot of things at Rice, it depends entirely on what college you are assigned to. Wait until you find out what college you're in, then ask around there - besides you have about 10 months to worry about this.
I know Lovett, which probably has the largest basement on campus by far, allots about half of its basement space to summer storage, allowing every student in the college to store anything they want in a relatively uncrowded manner. The basement also survived tropical storm Allison with no flooding, so it's pretty safe as far as flooding is concerned. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Weiss has no summer storage at all (if I remember correctly, though I can't confirm that).
There are also quite a few self-storage places around campus and you can probably find a friend to split one with you.

yep.. im at Wiess and there is no official storage at all.

Nancy, the Brown College Coordinator, aka "Office Goddess", says that while Brown has storage space, it has been known to flood. It didn't flood while my son was there.

Brown stores stuff in the basement which has flooded in the past. However, it has large shelves and only the floor and the bottom shelf were flooded so to be safe go for one of the top shelves even though they are a pain to reach.

My son stored off campus in self storage and shared with 2 others. It worked out very well. After the first year or two some friends will probably move off campus and if you're lucky they will let you put your things in their apt for the summer.
