Stores within walking distance?

My sister is going to JHU as a freshman in the fall! She recently got off the waitlist :) We have a few questions.

What stores are within walking distance of the Homewood Campus, where she can buy paper towels/dorm supplies, etc? Are there any? I've heard there's a Walmart but I'm not too sure. What's in the area?

Are there any pharmacies (Walgreens, CVS, etc.) on campus or within walking distance?

What clothing stores, etc, are within walking distance?

HOTELS within walking distance, or close, for family to stay at.

Any other convenient places within walking distance you'd like to share?

Please and thank you!

[Here’s a map](http://i.imgur.com/X7LM1tg.jpg) with numbers corresponding to the pictures below.

Paper towels, dorm supplies
There aren’t any Walmarts near JHU, but she can pick up the [Collegetown Shuttle](Shuttle | Baltimore Collegetown Network) and have it take her to Towson, where a Target and Bed Bath & Beyond can be found.
1. Charles Street Market
“Charmar” as it is known to students. Here dining dollars, J-Cash, and real money are used to pick up groceries and small essentials like deodorant, nail clippers, or toothpaste.
2. Barnes & Noble
Believe it or not, the upstairs has many dorm items, school supplies, and personal essentials.
3. Eddie’s Market of Charles Village
Groceries that are cheaper than Charmar, but not as cheap as…
4. Giant
The cheapest groceries. I wouldn’t make this walk at night, however.

Pharmacies
5. Rite Aid
Again, don’t make this walk at night unless you travel in a pack.
6. CVS
I wouldn’t go to this at night either, but during the day, one little trick is to use the JHMI for just one stop, which lets out close to this CVS.

Clothing
No one does their clothing shopping in the neighborhoods around Charles Village. The area is too residential to house retailers. Again I would advise taking the Collegetown shuttle to Towson, where the luxurious [Towson Town Center](Towson Town Center Directory & Map | Towson Town Center) can be found, a large shopping mall. Alternatively, she can take the JHMI to Penn Station, and from there catch the Charm City Circulator to bring her into the Inner Harbor, where many retailers are.

Hotels
[7. The Colonnade](http://www.colonnadebaltimore.com/)
I’ve stayed here, it’s very nice.
[8. The Hopkins Inn](http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60811-d120956-Reviews-Hopkins_Inn-Baltimore_Maryland.html)
This is unavailable as it is presently being used for the recent overadmission of students, into Spring 2014 I believe.

Other
9. The Rotunda Cinemas
A smallish indoor shopping center called The Rotunda houses a smallish movie theater. There’s also another RiteAid in there. I’m not sure how popular this knowledge is.

I wish your sister good luck!

I’m not the OP, but I’m also an incoming freshman. Just wanna say thanks, travismarie - that’s very helpful!!! :D

Thanks so much, this was so helpful! I appreciate all the time you took to write this out. My sister thanks you.

Just wanna add that the double tree Colonnade gives you a free cookie when you check in^

Also, if you know someone with a car/parents visiting, you can drive to the costco or sam’s club which are only about 20-25 minutes away. I like to take a trip to costco in the beginning of the year and buy a huge amount of paper towels, plates, and cups. That way, I will have enough and can buy more if needed during breaks.
