STORYTIME Freaky Andover Interview

Hi guys!

I am really really anxious about M10 (10 days OMG), and figured that it might be a good idea to rant a little on here in order to get rid of the anxiety (one main thing is stressing me out)

OK so I know this is really really basic, but I really want to get into Andover (wow how surprising)

I interviewed in October (a rep visited Colorado), and it was honestly the weirdest experience. The guy was youngish; he wore a hoodie and jeans. He brought me to a room alone with him, where he pulled out his computer. He asked me my full name and birthdate, and continued to type my answers into his computer. Then he asked me what my grades looked like, I replied with my response (straight A’s), then he typed that into his computer. Then he asked me if I had any opinions on the Presidential race, and I replied with a kind of “on the fence” response. Then he asked if I had any questions for him. That’s all. Nothing else. He talked to my dad for a little bit after, but didn’t really ask about me. The whole thing was roughly 15 minutes. I know that that was my interview because we emailed beforehand, and I recently wrote him an email confirming that that was my real interview. Why did this happen? Did he think that I wasn’t a good fit? I’m really annoyed because all of my other interviews went really well; I love to talk, and to make people laugh! This guy didn’t ask about anything else. IM SO CONFUSED!

What I’m really stressed about is that I know that the interview is a big deal; and as an applicant who isn’t an athlete or has won every award known to man, my interview was my chance to shine. I don’t know what to do! I have some really interesting stories and such that I love to tell during my interviews, and I didn’t get that chance. The whole thing is really getting to me and I feel as if I wasn’t given an actual shot (not to sound bratty).

What do you guys think? Is this gonna destroy my chances?

If you want to see the rest of my stats in order to give a more educated answer, feel free to see my other threads!

Thanks everyone!!!

Haha your experience at Andover was just like mine. My interviewer asked barely any questions, was on her phone the second I walked in, and was trying to hide the fact she was texting during the interview. Keep in mind, this is before the talking part of he interview started. I know of many people who did not have the best interview at Andover. However goodluck! (You aren’t alone. Keep your hopes up)!

wow, your interviewers sound so non-committed to what they’re supposed to be doing! Perhaps it was because your interviews were off-campus? @Bunny8280 was that the case for you? I had an on-campus interview and my interviewer chatted with me for around 30 minutes and our conversation got very in-depth.

@livesk8dream Although it was off-campus, two other of my interviews were too; and they went great! I’m so confused and I just want to know why that happened :(( :))

Here’s an interview thread from a few months ago that you may find interesting to read:

@Bunny8280 – did you get in Andover? Or are you applying?

An off campus interview is usually NOT “a big deal”. Your interviewer’s report will go in your file. The more thorough and specific it is, the more impact it can have to admission decisions. If as you said it’s done haphazardly, then the AO taking charge of your application will know by reading the report and by knowing the interviewer’s background. Of course, in some cases you could get a boost from a hugely successful interview, but the majority of applicants don’t and many of them do still get admitted. Hope this helps.

@AppleNotFar Thanks so much! @panpacific Yes, it did help! Thanks for your helpful response
