street parking around ucla...

ok so i know parking is a complete b i t c h in LA...i have friends who brought their car last year w/o a parking permit and just parked it on the streets, and it was a complete pain and terrible but they made it work, street cleaning and all...

there is an opportunity i really do not want to give up that requires having a car, and i am p i s s e d that i may not be able to do it because of the situation (obviously no permit in my hands). has anyone tried just street parking the whole year and can you tell me how terrible it was? just want to get an idea of what im in for...is it worth it if i really really like what id be able to do with the car? hahaha. any ideas welcome.

my roommate didn't have parking last year, so she rented a spot at a nearby church for about 100 bucks a month. The only catch was that she had to move it on sunday mornings. good luck!

My roommates both did it last year. It was an inconvenience, but they dealt with it and it never ended up being that big of a deal. My roommate manages to find spots right outside our building, which is pretty ridiculous since we're on one of the busier blocks. So yeah. It's definitely manageable.

It also depends on where you'll be living though. If you're in the dorms it'll be a little more difficult all around since you'd have to deal with manuevering through campus first. But someone is ALWAYS leaving (except between 1 and 630 AM...it's considerably more difficult during this period) so people generally manage to find spots. It might just take a little while (again, depending on various factors).

If you do end up doing street parking, stay super vigilant about moving your car when necessary. And I mean, like, to the minute. I see tow trucks every morning just waiting for 7 and 8 o'clock so they can tow. Same goes for the parking enforcement people. They really just sit there and wait until the clock strikes, so make sure you're always at your car 5 minutes early.

...and make sure your clocks aren't 5 minutes late! :D

allie, do you know more about moving the car in the morning? isnt thursday street cleaning or something? so id have to get up at like 6 to move it? (and then where do i move it to?)

i got parking for the school but not for my apartment...could i get away with just keeping it in the lot overnight?

Does anyone know the name of that church? That sounds like an ok deal.

Yeah. "Street cleaning" on one side of the street (east usually) is on Thursday, and the other side of the street is on Friday. For street cleaning I'm pretty sure you have to move by 7, but it might be 8. Not positive. The rest of the time you technically have until 10 since it's two hour parking and they start patrolling at 8. So even if you're there over night your two hours starts at 8. The two hour parking is in effect monday-saturday and goes from 8-6. Sundays have all day parking.

This only goes for the North/South running streets like Kelton, Midvale, etc. Gayley and Veteran have other rules. One side of Veteran has all day parking except on thurs/friday for cleaning, and the other side has parking except from 3-7pm. It's kind of complicated but you learn to just pay attention to the signs.

But yeah. It will vary depending on where you end up parking that day. But the earliest you have to move a car is 7am, I think. Lots of people use timers and stuff to make sure they move their cars on time.

Aubstopper- Technically you're not allowed to garage your car, but they don't patrol late at night and if you have a permit it should be ok. They really couldn't prove that you weren't just there to use the gym/study/whatever.

if you dont mind a 20-30 minute walk (from hedrick area), there is a street a little west of veteran called glenroy. there is parking there and no street cleaning.

Is it permited though? A lot of the residential (like, single family home) areas are permit parking only.

And street cleaning starts at 8. Officially.

No permit or street cleaning. It's a little far but probably closer than Wilshire. If I had to use a car everyday it would be a major inconvience, but if you plan to only use it on weekends it's not that bad.

thanks for that info...is there always space or do i have to be lucky?

you can probably find a space. it's the closest street to the northwestern end of ucla that isn't permitted, and it has a light so you actually can get on sunset.

another Q....how nervous should i be about leaving my car outside in the streets of LA (say, if i were to park at glenroy)...are there high rates of damage and hit/run incidents :(

not in the part that UCLA is near.. its where movie stars and old boring people live. perfectly safe.

People park very very very expensive cars on those streets (and most streets in LA) all the time. There're always random accidents and stuff, but the chance of someone side swiping you or breaking in or whatever, especially in Bel Air/Westwood, is unlikely.

Unless you lived on Gayley last year and were one of the 4 cars the crazy drunk dude ran into at top speed. But that was a total fluke and a street with much more traffic than Glenroy so I'm sure it'll be fine.

I've only known 1 person to have had their car broken into (on Veteran), and their car was the friggen SC Pride Mobile, so maybe that's why :P

In that case, they deserved it.

Exactly... I mean, I love the girl, but is it really necessary to own every single piece of USC paraphernalia available to mortals And wear her $C sweater around our lovely school?
