KPM~ Along with every other important life skill, it seems your son has learned and is getting at A+ in resiliency-more important than Calc. I know I had a talk with plebe and agreed that it didn't matter how long it takes so long as he graduates. The friend factor is the catch, but I would hope/guess they will make life friends across the classes? I also understand that he's a good company. But it's GREAT that he is going to tutoring; I know that has been my son's saving grace. He swears by it. So now they are starting with a clean slate, new profs, new students (apparently they are split up now engine/deck), no sports and it sounds like he's got a plan to succeed. Here's to a new beginning. Best wishes!

kpfootball mom....he will do well next go round. This stuff happens..and he will be more determined coming back. and he will have an edge over the other classmates, knowing what to expect. You will hear about more setbacks as time goes on. Best of luck to him

KPFootballMOM, my son like yours failed both calc and physics. He got behind from the start worked to improve his grades with tutors and everything but failed the finals. He is very disappointed and feels he let all the folks at KP down as well as us. I was so proud of him when after finding out he had failed the two classes he still went and gave his KP presentation to his HS to help his Plebe class. He is very determined to go back when he is allowed and understands now, of course hindsight is 20/20, what he needs to do. He will miss his 2011 buddies a lot but he will meet new buddies as time goes on.

Talk about life lessons. These are the ones as parents we hope our kids never have to face but it is awesome to see how our kids are facing them. Best of luck to all those who remain at KP and to those who may be in the same boat as our son.

Wow Wow Wow--

I had no idea how hard this place was!!! My DS did not fail, but now probably has mono.

I agree that these kids are so tight, that they will make friends across the grade levels. At least that is what I am seeing with my DS and his football buddies.

My hats off to these fine young men and women. Boy, what an interesting trip this has been. So many fine resillient KPer's!!

I know we all are, but let me say it--WE PARENTS SURE ARE PROUD!!!

Best of Luck to all in this new "tri"!

Just a word of thanks for all of the support. For all of the parents of kids that are set back remember this is only a stumbling block and a huge lesson in life. Be positive and continue to support their endeavors. Once they return to the academy next July, they will be wiser, have all taken Calc & Physics at local colleges and be able to wow their instructors. Remember what doesnt kill them only makes them stronger. I can only say that I am truly humbled by all of the public and private messages of support and sharing of similiar stories. We are truly a community blessed.

Thank you KP parents & midshipmen.

Woo Hoo!

I am getting mail from S almost every day now, sometimes SEVERAL times a day!

It's usually after I send him something.
And, granted, it usually only contains 'Read Receipt'.
But it's something! ;)

So, even if I CAN'T get him to write, I am having a deep sharing experience with his computer's outlook program. :D

S'ok.

Actually, we DID get an unsolicited email recently. Asking about our thoughts on a prior president... You know, since you guys were alive back then...
It's the email equivalent to "SO, how was life back in the **OLDEN** days?"

When he comes home for Thanksgiving, I'll see if I can point him in the direction of a woodshed.

(That dang kid better be going to all the tutoring available, since I DON'T think he has a promising future in political elected offiice, or in speech-writing!)

I am a bit confused. Does an F in one class means that you have to leave KP and return the following year?

No, Failing one class does not mean you will be set back. It is possible to make up classes in summer school but, that means fitting an entire trimester's worth of work into 4 weeks. It is a pretty aggressive schedule. It is also possible to "lag " a course as an extra class during the next trimester, but, it adds to a heavy workload and makes things that much harder.

Our mid (and others) had to pick up Calc. II in summer school as he was behind from not having Calc I 1st trimester. It actually worked out pretty well. In summer school all the focus is on the class you have. It set him a little behind his class for sea days, but he is making those up. He also had a whopping 5 days back home in June and he's been 1/2 way around the world since. Can't wait to see him at Christmas. Indeed, Christmas is starting to feel like it was when I was kid. It takes forever to come and then its gone so fast. Instead of waiting for Santa to come down the chimney, I'm waiting for a young man to come off an airplane in his dress blues.

St Crispian, "Your analogy is so sweet" ... as a mother of a plebe would say. I guess we will be there too next year. We already feel like the holidays will be all the more special in this first year with our son. We hope that he doesn't have to take a course again but it is encouraging to hear that it all works out and that they are able to accomplish the courses in summer school if need be. Thanks for sharing!

Along this line, what happens, worst case scenario, second trimester they fail two courses? or what if it happens in third trimester? or in following trimesters/years?

Impressive. From 4:47 (that's sweet) to 4:50 (what happens if they fail multiple) !
3 minutes to go from happy to worried!

Now, lglass, don't get me wrong. NOTHING wrong with that. I just see that I am not alone (thank goodness) and there is someone who is after my transition record. You'll have it too, . . . . as soon as you what those languid transition MINUTES to blisteringly fast SECONDS ;)

And I think it is a great question. Enquiring minds want to know ! (really) Thanks for asking.

Well, obviously the more classes you fail, the harder it is to make them up.
Once you start failing multiple classes it becomes more likely that you will be facing a setback. Also I am told that certain classes (celestial navigation,
terrestial navigation.) must be passed before the m/n can go to sea as they are Coast Guard required courses. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it gets worse. 2010 had a lot of setbacks and disenrollments after the second trimester. My son lost two of his best friends in one day. There is reason for hope, however, I met a recent graduate at the local gym who told me it took him 4 tries to finally pass calculus 2. If they believe you really want to be there they seem to find a way to get you through.

Ok, I am seeing this after 4 hours with my daughter at ballet/pointe classes ... Zonker, thanks for putting a smile on my face! You hit the nail on the head! Up and down, on the rollercoaster of emotions every day since Indoc! ... and before ... BUT you did it in such a funny way!!
The truth of what you wrote is a bit daunting in knowing that this will most likely continue for the duration of our sons at KP! Oh me, oh my ... after reading KPMarineopsdad's response to my question, I am back down "in the depths of dispair" (ha!) not quite but yes, a bit more worried!!!! This information all the more presses me to pray for our young men/women at KP! Thanks for the info though not easy to swallow. :o)

Okay what happens if you are set back, well you are given a contract which you must follow. My son is enrolling in a local college and taking calc, physics and chemistry. He will go back and now graduate with 2012 and have to repeat the first tri with the exception of the all of the classes that he passed with a C and above which is everything but calc & physics. So until he returns, he will go to school, get a job and save his money for his weekend leaves in NY next year and begin his work out program that the football coach gave him. Not all bad, however, I was told that they are not offering many set backs any more and disenrollment is going to be more prevelent. So we are grateful. There is always an upside.

Go KP...........
