Stressed - AP World History

I just received my AP textbook, "Traditions and Encounters" 1169 pages.

Ok, I plan on reading all of it. By the definition of "all of it" i mean procrastinate and only ready 60%.

Any tips on what to actually do? I am aiming for the full blown 5 for the very first AP I am taking. I just want to impress my teacher especially, since he's a good teacher, and he has only one student who had a 5 before (he had a lot of 4's though), and I want to be the second.

Plus, my school is in a REACH program, where they give $300 for a 3, $400 for a 4, and $500 for a 5 for almost every AP we take.

I have that same book. It’s SO boring for some reason. I like American Pageant for APUSH much more.

And wait-- They just hand you money? Why wouldn’t you self-study easy APs like Psychology and Human Geography?

Holy crap. If my sister were payed for her APs, she’d have upwards of $3000. And I plan on taking more than double what she did. Your school actually pays you hundreds of dollars to do well on APs? That’s insane. Where do you live? I’d like to move there.

We can’t self study those. To get the money, we have to go to a conference (2-3) meetings for each AP, and has to be registered by teachers (school AP’s, so no self-study).

My school is just automatically registered for it (REACH is a nyc specific program for only a select 4-5 or so High Schools). Count me lucky i guess lol.

Read 1 chapter a week – you’ll finish around the time the AP exam. Skip the first chapters about Egypt, Persia, and Sub-Saharan Africa (except for the Bantu). The book has a lot of superflous material, too. Don’t bother reading Chapter 40.

Read the primary sources, try to read one per chapter, and then identify bias and purpose. Use the website for the book when you can, the outlines are invaluable.

At the end of the day remember that you won’t remember everything but you don’t have to. I used this book with my class and I got a 5. Get a good prepbook that works for you and you’ll get a 5 (or a 3 at least, if you’re not feeling good when you take the test).

paying $500 for a 5? only one student with a 5 on world? is your school super low achieving or something?

and the AP World test is super easy. a good part of multiple choice could be reasoned through with only basic knowledge of history. just read your book, or listen to your teacher lecture. i got a 5 and i don’t recall putting in any effort whatsoever.

500$ FOR A 5? I would totally go to that school to knock off all the easy APs.

My school is a black/hispanic school (I’m asian) with a not so good record of AP scores. So REACH was a program started to motivate people for success.

@Orange, thanks for the advice, I will try. I need recommendations for prep books though.

What do they contain anyway?

Prep books: Barron’s or PR. Both are very good.

What school is this! My sister’s tutition is probably paid already by freshman year if 5=$500

Dude I’m in the same boat! I hate that boring book and it really needs to be updated.
Ok so, my teacher makes us take the notes in a certain template that she calls spice:

Social–Development and Transformation of Social structures
•Gender roles and relations:
•Family and Kinship:
•Racial and Ethnic Constructions:
•Social and Economic Classes:

Political–State-Building, Expansion, & Conflict
•Political Structures & Forms of Governance:
•Empires:
•Nations and Nationalism:
•Revolts and Revolutions:
•Regional, Trans-Regional, and Global Structures and Organizations:

Interaction between Humans and the Environment
•Demography and Disease:
•Migration:
•Patterns of Settlement:
•Technology:

Cultural–Development and Interaction of Cultures
•Religions:
•Belief Systems, Philosophies, and Ideologies:
•Science and Technology:
•The Arts and Architecture:

Economic–Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems
•Agricultural and Pastoral Production:
•Trade and Commerce:
•Labor Systems:
•Industrialization:
•Capitalism and Socialism:

I’m not going to lie…I absolutely HATE taking notes this way because you can’t just write down something that seems important, instead you have to think about what categories every important details fall under BUT it helps a TON!! my teacher told us to go through the chapter and mark S, P, I, C, or E next to something that seems important than put it in our notes afterwards. It truly does help a lot. That way, when you are taking any quizzes or notes you will be a lot more familiar with what it is talking about. However, don’t skip any chapters like someone suggested unless your teacher tells you that you don’t need to read it. Don’t take the risk. Also, go on www.amazon.com and search for 2012 Kaplan AP World History Prep-book. It’s about $11 the last time I checked and my teacher told us we needed it. And if you need study help for tests get that flashcards from the same company that are $15-$16 I believe. Good luck!xD

^ Wow, same with me :stuck_out_tongue: And thanks alot for the advice, i appreciate it!

My teacher has a 5 themes sheet, geography, culture, social structure, politics, and economy.

I’m having trouble with this essay though now. The changes between the Neolithic period to the Complex Societies.

Ugh :(

@Saugus: i actually like reading three chapters of the American Pageant every week [/confession]

Just read the book, get a review book, take the exam & get a 5. It does work.

I had World Civilizations by Stearns or something. Never read the book (I just used the online pearson’s website). A in the class. 5 on the AP. Book was some 1200 pages.

AP seemed really easy too…good teacher? IDK maybe…but I fell asleep so often because she’s SO FREAKING boring and monotonous.

Gleesh, 500$???

If I had 500 dollars for every 5 i got, i’d have…500$.

But cereal, i never read the book, hardcore reread the Barron’s review book twice (400pgs) and got a 5 easy. By the night before the test, I was getting 65/70 right on the MC. And this was as a freshman too.

I suggest memorizing, literally memorizing the rubrics for APWH FRQs and DBQs, use an acronym. Your ap teacher probably grades your essays for a lot more random crap than College Board.

I think I did really well on today’s test! It was extremely stressful; we had 45 minutes for an essay (mine was 3.5 pages) and 45 minutes for a 62 question test. Even so, I wrote convincingly with good points, and the test portion was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Hoping for an A plus!

I got a 95% on my first test :(
