Stressed not from being admitted, but from the threat of being rescinded because of an overlook on the system

Hi everyone,

Like some of you here, I am a transfer student who got into my dream school at UCB as EECS. I was excited at first and hastily accepted the offer. However, I noticed that the conditions of admissions contradicted my UC applications and TAU. In both forms, I have stated I will take two classes to fulfil the arts and humanities part of the IGETC, and have successfully signed up for these classes for summer 2021. But, under my conditions of admissions, this fact might have been overlooked and I was expected to complete these two by Spring 2021. I have sent an inquiry yesterday about this, but I am wondering if anyone has any advice on this topic or has been through a similar process.

Thank you for your time, and I wish you have a wonderful rest of the week.

I don’t really know but I would think the intent is to finish them before attending in the fall. You are doing the right thing by contacting them and that will also relieve any anxiety. I think it will be fine.

Thank you!! I might actually be wrong because I had my friends go over the conditions, and it appears that I only have to finish courses related to my major before spring 2021. So this might not violate my conditions of admission since the courses I will take during the summer are mainly for GE requirements.

Thanks again for your kind words!

Talk to the student advisor and they’ll tell you what to do. Go to their chat and zoom front desk. I was told to submit an Update Form explaining the situation.

why are you bothering with IGETC? Engineering says:

*Please note, the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) offered at California community colleges is not accepted by the College of Engineering.
Junior transfers - Berkeley Engineering

Anyway, where things get tricky on what you must do (and whether the deadline is spring) is the vague nature of the requirements and the seeming contradictions found in multiple cross-references. I honestly don’t know if you need to finish all the general ed classes that Cal wants for engineering before spring. Here is a trail:

To be eligible for admission, transfer applicants must meet UC admissions requirements, which are detailed online at Berkeley’s admissions website.
[from Junior transfers - Berkeley Engineering]

going to the admissions website link above leads to

The minimum requirements for Berkeley transfer admissions are listed below. It is important to note that transfer admission requirements will vary by college and major, however there are a number of requirements that are common across all colleges. These requirements must be complete by the end of the spring term prior to the fall term you are applying for:

  • Completion of general education/breadth requirement

so here they appear to require completion by spring. But if you then go to Prospective junior transfer FAQs - Berkeley Engineering it says in part

Applicants must complete all of the required courses for admission and as many of the strongly recommended courses that are available at their school for their intended major. Technical courses must be taken for a letter grade. Applicants must also complete the equivalent of UC Berkeley’s English 1A and English 1B for a letter grade.

Ok, so 2 semesters of English is definitely required. But what about the rest of the breadth? That page goes on to say

If they would like to complete suitable courses prior to admission, transfer applicants are encouraged to visit our page on humanities and social sciences requirements for more information.

Well, things that someone “would like” to do are not required. So in the end the admissions website seems to require all breadth to be completed, but the engineering site doesn’t.

Hopefully someone at Cal will straighten this out for you soon

Thanks for detailing everything! I had my counsellor and friends go over it, and I do believe I was mistaken. I will already be finishing up all my requirements for my major as a transfer by spring 2021, so the classes that I will take during the summer are outside my major requirements and will be used to fulfil humanities only.

I already sent an update form so we will see how it goes!
The only real problem would be my official enrollment verification for summer is not up yet, so I submitted an unofficial transcript showing my enrollment for the summer classes and see how it works out!

Thanks for replying! I have just submitted an update form so we’ll see how it goes!

So a quick update! There was nothing to stress about, I sent an updated form and heard back from admissions in about a week. My offer is sustained!
