Stressed out, is it still possible to get in?

I’m very stressed out at this point, and I really want to get into the University of Michigan.

My school has only 52 people, and the acceptance rate from my school to the University of Michigan is 100%. Only like 1-2 AP courses are offered per year. Our school offers no sports, and no other clubs.

GPA: 3.96 or 3.97 idk (only received two B’s since my freshman year)
SAT: 1330 21/24 writing - Superscore: 1370
In-state
6 AP Classes (1 sophomore, 2 junior, 3 senior)
2 Dual Enrollment classes at a nearby college
Rank: 2/11, and 1/11 if I focus hard on my studies this semester.

  • 100+ hours as an emergency room volunteer at Hurley Hospital
  • 120+ hours at an endocrine consultant doctor office
  • Public Relations at a Muslim National Organization (got over 120 kids to attend a camp)
  • Secretary of the Student Council in 11th grade
  • Vice President of the NJHS in 9th grade
  • Senior class representative in 12th grade
  • National Honor Society Member
  • Soccer Club in Oakland called Vardar, Michigan. Committed there for 4 years.
  • Islamic Studies tutor for two months during an annual summer program.
  • Youth Coordinator at my local mosque
  • Flint Water Distributor
  • School Ambassador for an annual scholastic tournament in Detroit that our school attends.

A lot of people read my essays and told me that they were nothing like they’ve ever seen and that they were perfect. So I have that out there for me. My personal statement was exceptionally written, too.

My AP Literature teacher wrote my recommendation, I’ve known her for a good 6 years as she taught me in Middle School, too. - Amazing writer
My second recommendation was from my Biology teacher as I was his most successful and energetic student. - Above average, has been published in some works.

Also, if I sent in a higher score, and after that, I got a lower score but accidentally submitted it to the University of Michigan, will they ignore the lower score or will it have some influence in their decision? Or will they just consider the highest score only?

DISCLAIMER: I am not a college admissions rep, or a student enrolled at an Ivy, or anything like that. However, I have done a little research on your topic and as a fellow senior, I’ve basically spent the last four months obsessing over college
Look up whether UMich superscores.

If a college superscores, they will ignore any scores that do not raise the composite.
If not, they will look at all of them, but likely require you to send all of them anyway, so there’s no way to hide it regardless.

At least they say they will. There is some chance that it may unofficially affect their opinion of you, but unless it was significantly lower than a 1330 it will likely not be a big deal.

First, the bad news.
If you’ve done any research at all, you should know that UMich is used to students with significantly higher scores and, (I’m really sorry I’m just going to say this like ripping off a bandaid) having a superscore just barely above their 25th percentile is not going to do you any favors. I’m a fellow senior with a GPA equal to yours and a 1570 natural SAT – I didn’t apply to UMich because I considered it too selective. Also, you can’t rely on your school’s previous acceptance rate to UMich to get you in unless your stats and experiences mimic those of former students who were accepted. Similarly, your class rank matters very little if your entire class is 11 people.

Now, the good news!!!
As long as UMich is aware that your school offers a very small range of activities, they won’t really hold it against you that you haven’t done very many. Your EC’s look great, far better than what most people our age can put down. Play to that; it’s going to be one of your big strengths. Also, if you’re as good a writer as you say you are, the recs essays should be a huge boon to your application. Make sure you put a lot of thought into them and have some people proofread.
Plus, being involved with your mosque will help a lot if you can work being muslim into a diversity component (I’m Catholic, no such luck :frowning: , we’re too common here) . UMich LOVES diversity, especially of the religious and ethnic variety and having something uncommon to bring to the table will be a very important factor.

I’d like to repeat my disclaimer and sign off with the prescription that this advice is to be taken once daily, from now until February 1st (UMich RD deadline), with water and a grain of salt.

Oh and another thing - if that GPA is unweighted then you’re in a good place. If it’s weighted…not so much

Thank you so much for your honesty. Yeah the goa is out of 4 and not 5. Also, I know someone with a 28 got in, 1380 sat and 1470, too. I think some lower ACTs im not sure. I just hope UMich considera all parts of my application and ignores my loeer SAT score and look at my highest one.

Good luck with your admissions, I applied earlt so a decision should be out bt the 21st

Oh, if that’s your unweighted GPA then you’re in a good place. From what I’ve heard colleges care way more about rigor and performance over 4 (well really 3 1/2 ) years than how you do on one multiple-choice test, especially since nowadays there are tons of people whose parents buy them really expensive test prep programs to ace one exam, but who don’t make much of an effort in their regular classes.

If other people from your school are getting in with similar stats then they shouldn’t be a barrier to you.

And ignore what I said before about not applying myself, I’m out of state so there’s a little bit more of a barrier there.
Anyway, if you’ve already applied and they’re responding on the 21, then don’t even worry about it. All you have to do is wait three days it’ll be okay.

Good luck!

UMich does not superscore, but they will look at your best score. If you can find out the average stat of the students admitted to UMich in the last couple years from your school, that would be a good reference. Don’t look at the lower range or older data. The admission stat has increased significantly in recent years and students admitted witg lower stat may have some hooks that you don’t have even they are from the same school.
Your current score is below the 25th percentile but still in the admission range from in state. You should consider retaking the test or try ACT to improve your chance.

They will respond on fhe 21st of december i meanr :frowning:

Dont have anymore chances, I can only hope now bro. Im 20 points under the 25th percentile right now unfortunately. I want to get accepted, and a deferred would obviously be better than a rejection so i can possibly take an ACT and show them, and also show them consistency in grades and new achievements. Alternatively, the continued letter of interest would help.

Acceptance is the primary goal.
