Hi!
I’m a senior and I plan on attending UMich next fall. Only problem-I have no clue what to major in!
I would like to major in something that allows me to graduate and work with a bachelor’s (no grad school for now), has a lot of options, and is something I want to legitimately do (I’m adamant about not going into education, accounting or healthcare, everything else is on the table).
As for what I like, I enjoy reading basically anything and history (all social studies, really) is my favorite subject.
Help!
Pre-law. History is fine for that.
Can you enter undeclared and try a few courses to see if that helps you focus in with the help of your advisor and perhaps the career center?
Yeah, I can enter undeclared. The career center sounds like a good resource here, @NorthernMom61
@damon30 I was thinking of law school, but I dunno if I want to commit to that right now
Thank you both!!
Law school does not require any specific undergraduate major or any specific courses (though some courses may be seen as positive by law schools, according to http://lawschoolnumbers.com/application-prep/making-undergraduate-courses-count-for-law-school ).
Take a variety of courses your freshman year – Math/Science, Humanities, Social Sciences – so that through your studies, you can maybe identify your passion.
Then major in what you love.
It sounds to me like History, Anthropology, English, Journalism, or Classics would be decent options. But you’ll know more once you have a year under your belt. Assuming Michigan’s work load is similar to Wisconsin’s (my alma mater), I’d suggest a schedule like the following:
Sem 1:
Chem, Bio, Physics or Math
Psych, Sociology, Philosophy or Poli Sci
English
History
Sem 2:
Chem, Bio, Physics or Math
Psych, Soc, Phil or Poli Sci
Classics
Anthro
If you can add a fifth course in semester two, in something you like, all the better
@prezbucky Thanks for the schedule idea. Hopefully something will shake loose then
