What are the strongest departments at Dartmouth?

Off the top of my head, foreign languages, computer science, and english. There are others as well.

Does it boost your acceptance if you major in East Asian studies because the school would need to ensure students are filling the seats in that major?

One would think that it would, but this very question was brought up in the Harvard forum a while back. Many students apply to these majors to boost their chances and then hope to transfer to another department. Unless you've demonstrated lots of interest in East Asian studies in high school (through projects, research, contests, etc), I'm not sure it would be very beneficial. Just my $0.02.

I agree......

What are some of Dartmouth's weaker departments?

altgirl, i wouldn't put down a department unless you're really interested. when i went for my interview, the interviewer knew that i'd put down government and international relations as my prospective major, so she asked me about it - i'd have looked really stupid if i didn't know anything about it, esp. since SHE ended up being a gov major. that way i was able to talk about my AP Gov class and various awesome projects we do, which I woudln't have been able to do otherwise

Dartmouth's Geography Department is the undisputed top ranking geography department in the Ivy League.

Jestersz, that almost goes without saying. No other Ivy League school can come close to matching our Geography department.

As for some other strong departments: Classics (excellent top to bottom), History, Philosophy (especially w/ Fogelin and Sinnott-Armstrong), Govy, Psych, etc.

ehh geography? thats like latin right?

Xanatos: According to the 2002 US News Ranking, Dartmouth's Computer Science department is ranked as #47, yet you said it was one of Dartmouth's strongest programs?

Well I haven't read the USNR 2002...however I can tell you that (and you probably know without me telling you) that Dartmouth is the place where BASIC was invented and where researchers first coined the term artificial intelligence, we had an electronic mail client before email was invented, and we were the first fully wired and later wireless campus. Maybe it has fallen off lately though.

just wondering...how strong is darthmouth's natural sciences department? (b/c i haven't heard people bragging about it)

dartmouth is the best.. every department is the best.. it is the best school ever..

and

i <3 Dartmouth

Overall almost every department is great. They will all get you into great grad schools, and the overall reputation of Dartmouth goes a very long way. Sometimes the smallest majors (and unranked) are the best. Anthropology for example gives VERY large grants for international research that is incredibly unique for undergrads. Is it ranked, not really, but most graduates I know end up going to the top grad schools because they have amazing contact with professors, opportunities for one-on-one research, etc.

I think looking at departmental rankings at the undegrad level is way overblown. The only areas it really makes sense are more hard skills oriented areas like computer science, film, and engineering (although most Dartmouth engineers end up going into business).

wisconsin,

could you say anything about particular classes in philosophy? I plan to double major with Chem., but I love phil, particularly ancient/mediaeval.

thanks,
