... and does anyone know of the quality of the Computer Science program?

While I do not know if these are also the strongest departments, the government, history, economics, English, and biology department account for well over half of the majors here at Dartmouth.

The chemistry department is also said to be really good.

what about physics and philosophy? does dartmouth have a good track record of sending physics majors to grad school?

I know nothing of our physics, but the phil department is said to be one of the strongest on campus.

that’s good. i’m interested in both majors and like the quaintness of the campus. i’m not sure if it’s a little too small but I do like the isolated atmosphere. how do students integrate themselves into research with such a small campus? do you think other schools offer opportunities that dartmouth doesn’t because of the different types of campuses?

Dartmouth’s philosophy department is unranked in both the philosophical gourmet and NRC rankings - two respected departmental rankings systems, and the only ones for philosophy. This means that it was ranked below all the other programs listed.

I doubt that it’s one of the “strongest” departments on campus.

Except I believe both of those rankings focus primarily or exclusively on the grad programs, saying nothing about the quality of the undergrad. Further it says on the philosophy gourmet website that “Among schools that do not offer the PhD or MA in philosophy, those with the best philosophy faculties would probably include: Amherst College, California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Reed College, University of Vermont, Western Washington University, and Wellesley College. The colleges in the Claremont system (Claremont-McKenna, Pomona etc.)”

Oh, whoa - totally didn’t see that. I didn’t realize Dartmouth didn’t offer PhDs. Apologies.

that’s interesting about dartmouth not having a ph.d program. i still think it would be a great school. does anyone want to share their experiences with the campus, i.e. what is your major, how have you enjoyed the close-knit atmosphere, etc.?

Dartmouth has strong programs in Kicka**, Lebanese bellydancing, and world domination. Why else would I apply there!?!?

Dartmouth has ph.d. programs, just not in philosophy.

Dartmouth actually has a grad program for physics. In terms of placement into grad school I’m not entirely sure, but I imagine it’d be similar to math. We had a guy go to cornell (turning down stanford), another to stanford, and one or two to berkeley. Keep in mind though that most people don’t choose to attend grad school and opt to enter the workforce, especially since there are so many recruiting offers for 100k+/yr jobs out of school.
