I've heard that Dartmouth is strong in all departments, which I'm sure is mostly true, but I was just wondering what departments Dartmouth is particularly know for? I am an EDer, so personally this is simply out of curiosity, but I'm sure the new admits will also find this information useful. Thanks!

Economics is the best. Its in the top tier along with Wharton and Harvard for being recruited by investment banks.

wow, how about pre-med stuff like bio and chem? Where does Dartmouth rank in that area?

Yes, how are the science departments? I know a lot of the students major in something science oriented, so I would think the departments would be strong.

Science depts are strong. The Neurosci dept is stacked...in conjunction with the Psych dept. Other ones I'm not so sure, but the Govt and History departments are absolutely wonderful.

... what's weak?

Walter Sinnott-Armstrong + Philosophy = One Ass-kickin philosophy department

there have been a ton of threads on this subject in the past. if you search for them you'll probably find some really good info

It's nice to read that Philosophy is strong. I'm thinking about majoring in it.

Good call BigGreenJen thanks. Here are some threads I found for others with the same question. There isn't much about weak departments, but some able person may respond to your question serf. BAD JOKE WARNING: What's weak serf? Your status in the feudal system. Haha...anyway here are the other helpful threads.

From what I've gathered it seems difficult to clearly designate the strongest departments at Dartmouth, because these conclusions are usually based off of graduate school rankings, and since Dartmouth is an undergraduate focused institution these rankings are few and largely unrepresentative of the quality of undergraduate education in each academic department (something entirely different than graduate school education). But that's exactly why Dartmouth is so wonderful! I guess unclear rankings are a trivial consequence of the personal attention one receives at Dartmouth as an undergraduate in ALL departments. Those are just my findings; please forgive my rambling haha. Good luck with your decisions everyone.

Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, he's my friend's DAD!!!

anyways, i took a few courses there...and i find dmouth's econ is probably like the above said, the best....i don't feel its engineering is that good though.

That's not true at all. Thayer is amzing. I suggest either visiting it, or else talking to some ENGS people who can tell you all about it.

"The Neurosci dept is stacked..."

What does that mean?

"Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, he's my friend's DAD!!!"

Oh my goodness, really? That's really cool, if you're not being sarcastic. Anyway, the man's a genius, and he has really inspired me a lot.

I really like my department--linguistics, almost every student majoring in linguistics knows each other, and it is the only department I know that holds regular happy hour in Murphy's.

i took ling 1. that was a pretty interesting class. i was thinking about taking more in the department.
