I was accepted to Binghamton University for Spring 2014. I am very happy and excited but at the same time confused. As with all transfer students, you have to begin the college process all over again and i dont know if it wiill be easy to adapt as a spring transfer where most of the class enters in the fall.

How will housing, roomate, and orientation for spring transfers work? How are the dorms CIW and hinman since they are cheaper than others.

Can any transfer students tell me how was the shift to Binghamton, did u like it there and adapt to the environment and make new friends.

Also those who are going to Binghamton in the spring reply just to get a general idea.

I’m waiting on my application decision for Spring 14 myself! This is irrelevant to your question, but I was wondering when you applied because you received an answer pretty quickly. Mine says “Decision: Application complete.” Did you have this at one point as well ?

I applied very early in august, and yeah my application said the same thing a few days ago but recently it said decision made and a line under says “accepted. Congratulations” you will prob be hearing soon. Are u applying as a freshman or sophomore and what are your stats? I think they are rolling admission though.

I’m applying as a sophomore. My high school GPA was great: 95%. I did horrible on my SATs: 490-Math 490-Verbal. College GPA is 3.2…So I’m hoping they overlook my SAT score since the most recent grades I have are my college grades. I sent in a recommendation letter and emailed an essay. I am from Queens, so I hope they consider that diversity lol… that school is full of long island kids.

I applied early August to and have not received by decision after about 2 weeks of my decision being application complete. Im a freshman transfer but considered as a sophomore with all my credits

When you were accepted did you get any information about housing? Once I was accepted, I got an email a couple of days after saying to activate B-mail but that was all…

i was accepted a few days ago also and i recieved an email about saying you are admitted and you will be recieving a package about your admission shortly. I did not get any information about housing yet. I didnt pay my deposit for spring 2014 yet so im guessing i will recieve housing info after i pay deposit? i am not sure though

I didn’t receive an email like you did. I only was able to tell on the status checker. I paid my deposit though and still didn’t receive any information

I got an email 2 days after my status checker changed so you will prob get one. Do you know what dorm you want to live in. I really hope there is space in newing, dickinson, or mt. view for next semester haha.

If you still care, I’m transferring over for the Spring 2014 semester as well! Lol just made my decision a few days ago to go to Bing and I have the same questions as you man

Have you guys heard anything about housing yet? Somebody told me that transfers get priority for the singles at Dickinson or the apartments at Susquehana and I was hoping my acceptance package would clarify on that, but it didn’t say much beyond that I got in.

I notice that there are lots of soon to transfer students replying to the threads but nobody sticks around.

I am planning for fall 2014. Could you guys possibly stick around a few months once in and answer transfer questions?

My case. I started late so I am going to be 25 entering in. Could lie that I am 21 but either way I might be cut off from the freshmen who want to get to know everybody new and I don’t want an all transfer floor because I know from CC experience that CC sucks the ambition out of students after 1 semester being surrounded by apathy. I’d rather stay local and commute if Bing or no school for that matter can let me integrate with the student body.

I’m hoping some of you stick around to answer about the transfer experience.

25yo, I’ll try to come back once I transfer. I am currently enrolled in a CUNY CC and I am entering Binghamton in the Spring. If you still have questions next semester, feel free to PM me. It should go to my email.

On another note, I doubt if a school that took 1,000 transfer students in the Fall semester would isolate transfer students at all. Yes, we might stick together a bit, but I think that’s probably because CC transfers are probably older and perhaps come from a place where they were working a job as their first priority rather than schooling. They may choose to stay separate (though from what I’ve heard from friends at Stony, that is not really the case), but that is a choice.

I also don’t think your CC experience can be said to be a blanket statement for all the CC transfers to Bing. CC is what you make of it. As both a student and a tutor in the campus’ literacy center, I have found time and again that many students are extremely ambitious and talented. Yes, there are students who skate by and celebrate if they get a 70 on their Psych midterm. On the other hand, a girl in my class recently came near to tears when she got a 92 on that very same Psych midterm. Most of my friends hold GPAs in the 3.7-3.9 range and most are aiming for graduate schools. CC transfer students to Binghamton are far more likely to belong to the latter group than to the former as those who are apathetic do not end up going away to a 4-year school.

There are statistics and studies showing CC transfers to perform very poorly to the academic load going into university. Some either do or don’t adapt to it by semester 2 which leads to higher dropout rates. Also apparently CC students are less involved in activities and clubs than the transfers from other universities.

Having been involved I’ve seen the freshmen ambition to get into the college and their study habits. By year 2 everyone just wings their way through classes where and show up last second to class and leaves soon as possible since knoing their classmates is irrelevant to them. The mentality becomes that CC is only here to do your business and leave. Realistically they got friends locally which is probably not the case with Bing being upstate where most city schools are commuters and long island places are 50/50.

The way I am looking at it. First year students are the ones looking to network and year 2 is when people have their groups which is a standard in most universities. The freshmen are at a greater advantage since the same roommates are way more likely to share the same classes as a transfer who is ahead on some combination of courses. Another transfer in the same department could have transferred in different courses than me making us on the same level but in different classes.

Surprised no other transfer students replied here. I transferred in Fall 2012.

Being a transfer isn’t bad at all. Honestly, it is what you make of it. Unfortunately, I was put in a suite with all freshmen in Mountainview - which is probably the worst situation for a transfer. Mountainview (Hunter atleast) was extremely antisocial. Everyone stuck inside their suites, I barely even knew my floor! Nevertheless, I made some great friends, joined a bunch of clubs and pledged a fraternity.

If you’re looking to be social, try living in Newing or CIW. Feel free to message me with questions. It’s currently finals week, so it’s difficult to answer this now, but i’d be more than happy to answer your questions!

Hey everyone! My name is Sam and I’m currently a sophomore transfer at Bing! I enjoyed reading through this post because just a couple months ago I was one of you! I remember being so excited about my acceptance to Binghamton and after orientation I spent my entire four hour car ride crying because I was so nervous. I thought I’d make the decision not to go anymore, but I’m glad I went through with it. First off, transferring was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love Binghamton and I can never picture myself ever transferring again, I honestly LOVE it here!
I went to Oneonta last year and I didn’t like how it was too much of a party school. At Binghamton, students know how to balance work and partying!
I joined a sorority this past semester and made the most amazing group of friends, and next semester I plan on getting involved with BTV and Pipe Dream (the campus TV station and campus newspaper)
The academics at this school are fabulous for such a great price! There’s so many interesting classes to take!
The dorms here are amazing! I live in the new dickinson community. I have my own room, and share two full size bathrooms with three other girls. And they get cleaned once a week. I have friends in other communities and they all love their communities whether they are brand new or have a good community feel!
I can literally rant all day about how much I love Bing, but I won’t! If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at swieder2@binghamton.edu!
Good luck with finding out your admission decisions and can’t wait to see you guys around campus!
