Back in high school, I couldn't imagine myself at any school other than NYU. I applied ED, got in, and the world was wonderful. Now I'm a sophomore, and I've come to terms with the fact that I'm very unhappy here and very disillusioned with this school. I've been thinking about transferring since last spring, but I'm having a really hard time gauging reaches/matches/safeties. Since I did early decision I never had the chance to see how I fared with admission to other colleges. I've been considering Cornell (CAS), Penn (CAS), and Northwestern, but I think I'm overestimating myself. Any input would be much appreciated!

College GPA: 3.6 (3.8 in my major, which is Psych)
HS GPA: 3.9
SAT: 2180
Internship since September, member of the NYU residential college, assistant manager at a small business in my hometown, 300 hours volunteer work. Many more ECs in high school but it doesn't seem like those are very important now.
Essays and recommendation should be solid. I'm also a first generation college student, if that helps at all.

I think you have a good shot at Northwestern, while Cornell and Penn are going to be a bit more difficult. Definitely add some more schools to that list if you are intent on leaving.

I'm also looking to transfer out of nyu and I say reach high. I think you have good chances. My situation is a bit different because I would be able to compromise in Gallatin, so I have no "safeties." But if you want to leave that badly, maybe you should look at some. A good start is your state school because a) you only have two more years b) it's cheap.

Also, I don't know how Villanova is with transfers but my friend in psych says there is some awesome research going on in the department there.

How about Tufts (close to Boston), Swarthmore (close to Philly), Vassar (you can get to NYC by train)? Smith College is beautiful, but an all girls school in close proximity to Amherst College (another one to consider?) and UMass... I'd also consider WashU if I were you. If you give us more specifics on what you are unhappy with, perhaps we can give better advice. Good luck!

Northwestern takes relatively large number of transfer each year, compared to other peers. You will be a competitive candidate if you keep up your good work.

Gah, You will get into Cornell! Seriously, I know people who were accepted with less competitive stats from SUNY schools. You'll be fine, really, unless I am missing something big.

On a side note, NYU psych = awesome. I would never attend NYU (not my kind of place), but the psych dept. is drool-worthy.
