I'm trying to fill out my FAFSA and CSS profile. However, I'm a little stuck when it comes to the financial part of both of them. These questions are gonna seem stupid, but I'm first gen. here in America, so I really don't have that many other options (from family) for help, and I'll be visiting my guidance counselor later, but she has over 300 seniors vying for her attention, so it's just easier to ask for help with those who have experience.

I don't work, therefore, I put a zero, right? Which means, I don't have to file taxes... I know those are weird/stupid questions, but I need clarification, just in case.

On another note, my mother has not worked because of her failing health. Therefore, we rely on the government and my uncle for support. So...I put zero in the block for my mother's income, right?

My uncle will be the one supporting me with my tuition, so...where do I put him on those forms?

Help please!

Yep, 0 if it doesn't apply or doesn't work for your family.

Well, for your mother's income, there might be something about SS/welfare (unless it is on another section). If it doesn't mention that within income, put 0. Put something in about your paragraph about that at the end of the CSS.

I'm not exactly sure what to write about your uncle to be quite honest.

i am kinda in the same situation as you narcolepticspoof. i hope you don't mind if i ask this question here rather than creating a new thread for it.

my question is about this:
Estimate the amount of your parents' itemized deductions for 2007 from their 2006 IRS Schedule A, line 28 and 2007 financial documents. Enter "0" (zero) if they will not itemize deductions.

what's irs schedule A?

It all matches up with the tax forms. I did the whole FAFSA/CSS myself. It's pretty easy to find. I think it's after the normal tax form. Just a btw.

elizabeth - Schedule A is where your parents' itemized deductions are documented, but some people don't take itemized deductions (usually those who aren't making payments on a home mortgage). If you have your parents' 1040 form, look at line 40. If there's a number entered, then they have also filed a Schedule A. If no number, that means no itemized deductions.

I applaud you kids who are filling out these forms, because parts of them are complicated. I'm going to the library today to get "How to Pay for College Without Going Broke" - supposedly it walks you through these forms. Maybe ask your counselor if the school has a copy of the book to help you with questions that don't get answered here.
