Student Answering Questions

Hello! With decisions coming out soon (Good luck to everyone :)) I'm sure you guys have some questions about Wake. If you do, you can post them here, and I can try to answer them to the best of my abilities.

are there a lot of preppy kids at wake?

and what is there to do there? (As in what can you do in your free time?)

and whats the policy with football and basketball games?

AC1460 - not exactly sure what you mean by the “policy” with football and basketball games - but my son joined the Screamin’ Demons as soon as he could in August - and that way - he gets to go to all of the games - has various t-shirts of support to wear, etc. I think it really helped make him feel part of the campus immediately.

There is a club/organization fair the first week you are there in August - so you can see the full array of possibilities and sign up for what interests you. My impression is that there is a lot to do on campus and many kids to off campus as well - movies, out to eat, events at other nearby schools, etc.

Preppy? I suppose. When we walked around campus during orientation in August - the kids just looked “normal” to me - by that I mean not very different from the kids at our hs. Some looked preppy, but many were just casually dressed in shorts and t-shirts. Not so preppy as to be a concern, imho.

how do you join the screamin’ demons? and when i went i thought they said season tickets were x amount of dollars but i just wanted to make sure i know how the tickets work there

I think as soon as he arrived there in August - my son found out (from his RA maybe?) how to sign up for the screamin deamons and did so immediately. I don’t recall him having to pay for tickets, but I could be wrong.

I was never in Screamin’ Demons when I was there, but my memory is that there’s a slight fee to be in it (I think this covers your T-shirts and whatever, and I think that it’s like $20). The tickets themselves are free. Student tickets to all sporting events are free (I believe), but the problem with both football and basketball is getting one of the student tickets if you’re not in SD, because the student section is sometimes filled up by the members of Screamin’ Demons.

is it hard to get into the screamin’ demons? im basically in love with sports so i really want to get in the SD’s haha

D is a senior this year. It’s never been a problem to get into SD, but you have to pay attention to when the sign-up is.

oh god this and notifications of decisions are stressing me out!!! i guess if i get in and i go then ill be ready with forms and money haha.

^^^ One thing at a time, AC! :)

i know i know. i think ahead too much!!!

“are there a lot of preppy kids at wake?”

Yes. Most people here are preppy. You don’t need to be “super preppy” to go here. I wear sweats and t-shirts to class and no one cares. But most people DO dress up for class (jeans, skirts, whatever). It’s not a huge deal if you don’t, but this isn’t a school where people walk into their 9AMs in pajamas. Most people wear JCrew, Vineyard Vines, Anthropologie, etc.

and what is there to do there? (As in what can you do in your free time?)

Literally anything you want to do. There are TONS of clubs, and everyone is active in something (literally everyone). If you like sports, there are TONS of intramural sports, club sports, and varsity sports, and then there’s Screamin’ Demons. A lot of people are active in Student Union, Old Gold & Black (newspaper), Greek organizations, cultural clubs, and community service based clubs. Many people choose to volunteer in Winston with their spare time, and lots of people have sports and whatnot to keep them active. Reynolda Village (shopping, icecream, etc) is only a short walk away, and beyond that there’s a museum, walking/running nature trails, and the Reynolda gardens. There is one thing you won’t be at Wake – and that’s bored.

and whats the policy with football and basketball games?

Football games are ALL super easy to get into. They’re free for Wake students with active school IDs. You can join Screamin’ Demons which means you automatically get a seat. You can drive to the games or you can take a shuttle. You need to drive to the basketball games (but since people normally go in masses, it’s never a problem getting a ride). Screamin’ Demons always get seats or standing room. Some “in demand” games like the Wake/Duke or Wake/UNC games can sometimes be hard to get into if you’re not a Screamin’ Demon, but no one I know had trouble getting tickets to them. All in all, it’s verrrry easy for students to go to sporting events. Soccer is big here, too!

“how do you join the screamin’ demons? and when i went i thought they said season tickets were x amount of dollars but i just wanted to make sure i know how the tickets work there – is it hard to get into the screamin’ demons? im basically in love with sports so i really want to get in the SD’s haha”

You will get an email about Screamin’ Demons sign ups pretty early on in the year. For football it is VERY easy to get a Screamin’ Demon ID and whatnot. For basketball it’s a little harder, but as long as you go the first day of sign ups you will be completely fine. For the Screamin’ Demons ID & shirt it’s $10.00, which is awesome because that probably basically just covers the cost of the shirt. You need to pay per season, but it’s definitely worth it. If you want to be a Screamin’ Demon, you will be. I suggest going really early to get in line though – you’ll probably get in either way but sometimes the lines get really long  Don’t be worried about this at all.

Is there some kind of form of transportation to take students to away football games? I really really wanna go to the FSU game, but its in Tally this year.

and what do Work/Study Jobs consist of?

Regarding away football games - sometimes there is a bus. My son took a bus to the Clemson game. He also signed up for an overnight bus trip to the Georgia Tech game -but that ended up being cancelled.

Regarding work/study - if your FA pkg includes this - you go to the FA office when you get to school and they will have the possibilites for you - working in the library, gym, athletic office, etc. My son was able to get a job working with the football team that he really enjoys. Make sure you bring your SS card - you need it for the job-related paperwork. (We did not know this and had to fedex it to him.)

Rockvillemom, if you don’t mind me asking, were you and your son happy with his financial aid package? Quite honesty, I’ve heard nothing but bad things about wake financial aid

Hi - we were beyond thrilled with the FA we rcvd. Our EFC last year was about $15,000 and I felt that our need was met. Wake was originally the most expensive college S1 applied to - after reviewing FA pkgs - it was the best deal. Now I will add, that he was a very strong applicant - I am not sure if that gets factored in at Wake. In other words, at some schools, 2 applicants could both have a $15,000 EFC - but get 2 very different pkgs - this practice is called preferential packaging. So, I have no idea really if what he got was typical or if it was better than most. Now just hoping he gets as good a pkg for next year!

Do you know if other students can do work study even if it doesn’t come in their financial aid package?

Hey Pinkcupcake -
I was wondering what campus day is like. Is it worth going? I already know I’m going there but I’m still curious as to what the day is all about
