Student Council: Should I join?

In my next school, I'll have the opportunity to join the student council. Judging by the number of posts featuring the words "Student Council President", I figured that this might be a good opportunity to ask for your opinions on the Student Council.

The last time I asked about SC I received quite a few negative responses so hopefully someone else can say something positive!

Thanks.

I’m guessing that Student Council = ASB.

They do nothing for the school. I decided not to join because it was actually a whole class period.

It’ll be a good way to make friends, but it really is pointless.

I’m a part of my school’s SGA, and it’s by far my favorite activity. We actually do a lot for the student body - plan and execute Homecoming, the pep rally, fundraisers, etc. Where I live, you also have the opportunity to get involved with the county and state SGAs, both of which have regular work sessions and student members of the board of education, who really do have a say in issues pertaining to us.

It really depends on what your school’s particular SGA is like, but I would say JOIN, and improve it to make it worthwhile, if it isn’t already.

It depends on what it’s like in you’re school. It could be almost inactive, or it could be a great leadership experience. Just keep in mind that the stereotype of the “perfect student” (4.0/val/student council president) is becoming less attractive to colleges, so SC needs to be something you can passionately expound on to an interviewer/on an essay, etc. And most states have statewide student councils, which might be something to consider. But from everything you’re asking, it seems like you really want to go for it, and you should!
