Student demographics

I saw that on the student breakdown page, davidson is not as diverse as some of its liberal arts counter parts. Can any Davidson students please comment on how diverse Davidson is? thanks

I recently visited Davidson, and it didn’t seem diverse whatsoever. There were a couple non-whites here and there, but overall there is a large white population.

Why don’t you look at the Common Data Set for Davidson. It breaks down that information (and gives you all sorts of other useful information). You can find it if you google it.

Davidson isn’t very diverse at all, but it’s diversity rates is something that they’ve been actively working on. If you want a more diverse liberal arts college then I wouldn’t recommend Davidson, but if you care about getting a great education, and a lot of support throughout your college career, and diversity isn’t too important, then you should look into applying.

From 2021 student profile (https://www.davidson.edu/admission-and-financial-aid/class-of-2021-profile):

Ethnic Backgrounds

Black/African American 8.2%
Asian American 8.4%
Caucasian 67.7%
Hispanic/Latino 6.7%
International 7.8%
Other or Unreported 1.2%

Totals to 100%, so looks like they treated both Hispanic/Latino and International students as distinct ethnicities in their tabulation and excluded them from the other racial categories. Alternatively, they just messed up the percentages…

For comparison, the US population (from U.S. Census) ethnicity:

Black or African American 12.6%
White alone 72.4%
Asian 4.8%
Native American, Alaskan, Hawaiian, etc. 1.1%
Two or more races 2.9%
Some other race 6.2%

Hispanic and Latino Americans (of any race): 16.3%

Difficult to compare directly, but relative to overall US population it appears that Blacks and Hispanics are a bit under-represented, Asians are over-represented, and whites are about the same proportion.

Are you a POC? If so, you could be an attractive candidate. Davidson lags behind its peers on diversity and multiculturalism. If you compare to the top 10 LACs like Amherst, Pomona, Wellesley, Williams, it has work to do to be on the same national stage. They have a multicultural weekend in October to attract candidates, so they must be trying to increase their diversity.
