Has any one here ever been employed by there college?
Hey guys, I will be attending Rutgers Newark this up coming Fall 2012 Semester, and I am thinking about getting a job on campus to help me pay for certain things. I will be dorming at the Newark Campus, and Do not know if my Payless job will transfer over to Newark As well. Has any one here ever done Student Employment for a College [Specifically Rutgers Newark], And if so how much do they usually pay and what type of hours do you get? Also is it hard to get employment by your university or college on campus?

Thanks a Bunch! :D

Pay is typically in the neighborhood of minimum wage (at least for jobs funded by federal workstudy dollars). It is typically administered by the financial aid office and has to be awarded as a part of your aid package. If you don’t get workstudy when you get your package, you can call back and ask for it. You’ll probably get something in the neighborhood of 10-15 hours per week.

If the finaid office denies you workstudy because it’s not in their budget (as opposed to the fact that it would put your package above total cost of attendance) or because they don’t have a placement for you, then do some legwork. Go find out what departments you might want to work in and ask if they could use you. At some colleges the departments have control over their workstudy budgets, so if you get in good with a supervisor they can take you on.

At Rhodes we’ve got an additional student employment program that is competitive and puts you in professional staff-level jobs for 10-15 hours per week at a much improved pay rate. It seems that surprisingly few other colleges offer anything similar.

Good luck.

Ok thank you for the information. But if I do get an on-campus job, will they pay be in actually money, or will the just reduce the total cost of tuition? That always confused me…

The pay is in actual money; you’ll receive a paycheck or a direct deposit.
