Student Housing Value Packs

Okay…this is the second time Davis has sent me information on these value packs for my room and stuff. The first time I ignored it because I figured I could buy most everything else cheaper or somewhere else. However, now that I’m looking at it again… I may be second guessing myself. Would it really be better if I bought a dorm value pack? I know the sheets and mattress pad and things would most definitely fit. However, is it really worth it? Do a lot of students on campus get these??

Most students just bring their own sheets, mattress pads, and blankets. Anyway, I never got info on a Housing value pack when I lived in the dorms last year, so maybe it’s a new thing they’re doing. How much are they charging for the value pack?

I am not sure if it is new. They’re mainly sending brochures to at least get the bed set. There’s like 4 different packs to choose from that is bed set and stuff including. The prices range from 159 to 259. The cheapest one has
2 Extra long flat sheets
2 extra long fitted sheets
2 Standard pillow cases
1 Extra fluffy machine washable pillow
1 extra long reversible comforter
1 extra long quilted mattress pad
1 extra long thermal cotton blanket
2 all cotton bath towels
2 matching cotton hand towels
2 matching cotton wash cloths
1 bedside buddy

that’s all for 159… There’s more stuff in the other packs…I’m scared though if the sheets I would get from somewhere else would not fit or something. Do you know what size the bed sheets are… If I bought anything from Davis it would probably be their sheets…I hate sheets that don’t stay on…

All the dorm mattresses will be a Twin XL (so about 80" in length), which you can find easily in stores. All stores that sell bedding supplies will have Twin XL sheets. When I lived in the dorms, all my bedding supplies (except the blanket–that came from home) came from Target.

Definitely cheaper to buy from other stores like Target. Anything the university sells is more expensive. For example, you can rent a mini fridge for i think $150, when it costs $60 to buy one from Target!

The RHL company guarantees the sheets and towels will last for 4 years. I ordered a value pack for my son and just recieved the shipment. The quality looks good. He will find out if they last. I priced many of the items individually through Bed,Bath and Beyond and it came out about $100 more. Only time will tell…
Also regarding the mini fridge rental. I checked the site today and it is $50 for a mini fridge and $165 for a mini fridge/microwave. I thought you were not allowed to bring any appliances from home since they may not meet the fire code???

@ Gumbymom: you can bring your own microwave and fridge from home, provided it’s not over 800 watts. Many students bring their own microwave from home because it’s cheaper. You can also bring your own coffeemaker. When we lived in a dorm, I bought a 700-watt microwave from Target and my suitemate bought a mini fridge. You can also bring other kitchen appliances and store them in your room, but with the exception of microwaved foods, you have to do all your cooking in the dorm kitchen (located on the first floor of each residence hall’s lounge) anyway.

From the Guide to Residence Hall Life:

(note: appliances that are UL approved will have a UL logo on the back or bottom. UL-approved microwaves have them on the back where all the information is printed)

I am on another colleges Facebook and the general consensus was that the sheets were of poor quality. One even said that the color actually bled on his son!

Microwaves are allowed. I don’t think coffee makers actually are but I had one and no one said anything. Toasters are not allowed since they are a bigger fire hazard.
