Student loan money for personal expenses?

I'm a freshman at Binghamton, and I'm going to be applying for a student loan in the next few days. Because I need money for personal expenses in addition to tuition, I was thinking of applying for a loan where a check would be sent directly to me.. however, I was told that if I applied for a loan where the money is sent directly to the school, and I applied for more than the tuition amount, most schools either send the student a check or put the money in an account for books and other expenses. So I was just wondering if anyone knew what Binghamton does for this type of thing...
