Penn State's 'Thon, a 46-hr marathon that is the world's largest student-run philanthropic event, begins this weekend. You can follow it here : http://www.thon.org/About/Events/THONWeekend and Sunday afternoon the total amount raised for The Four Diamonds Fund will be revealed. It supports pediatric cancer research, and families in crisis.

I wondered what other charities our students are working with; most schools have signature events even if they aren't the size of Thon. And I was ready for a feel-good thread :) Please share!

Northwestern’s Dance Marathon is the private-school equivalent to Penn State’s Thon. I believe it’s the largest private-university philanthropy. I love it, partially because I realized that I was in love with my boyfriend-now-husband while dancing at DM! My H also served as the food chair and both he and my son were actively involved in canning for DM. I plan to dance as an alum this year!

The University of Oklahoma has an annual Big Event where students go out across the Oklahoma city area and volunteer with a number of organizations. Last year 5,300 students volunteered, and it looks like it might be even more this year. In the immediate aftermath of the May 19th tornado, students and non students alike participated in the One Moore Big Event where they distributed supplies and helped clean up areas that were partially or totally destroyed by the tornadoes.

Emory University has a number of big service days, but the two most important ones are the 9/11 Day of Unity, where student fawn out across Atlanta to help with environmental cleanup, feed the hungry, or do any number of things. Additionally, in late Spring, Emory sponsors Emory Cares Day where students and alums work on various service projects ranging from park clean up, to renovating homeless shelters, to helping out high school students with their research.
