Student Taking Questions

Hey all applicants!

I'm sure all of you (including parents) are nervous/anxious about the application process, so if you have any questions about UConn and what it has to offer please feel free to send me a message with any inquiries!

Just a little history on myself so you know:
Sophomore at UConn Storrs Campus
Honors Student
Cumulative GPA at Uconn: 3.984
Resident Assistant
Congressional Intern
Double Major & Minor: Political Science and Sociology w/ a minor in criminal justice.

Please let me know if you have any questions about admissions, the campus culture, dining halls, whatever.

Good luck to all applicants!

Hi again.

Is it true that it is best to sign up for the earlier orientations? Also, what should i expect? Thanks! :)

Yea, definitely sign up for the earlier ones. They aren't better in what they offer...each orientation session has the same routine for helping all students become situated, choose classes, etc.

But choose quickly so you can actually do the overnight....I had one friend that signed up way to late and had to do a separate one day thing.

What do you do on weekends? I heard that there was nothing around UConn. And how is the campus/dorms/food? I haven't visited campus yet, I'm going to the open house on the 14th.

^I was wondering the same thing.

Also, how clean are the community bathrooms? And are they usually crowded? (The guys' bathrooms) And how bad is the drug/alchohol scene?

To linkinpark14, pple. mostly hang out at parties, or if you are not into prties. then they mostly just hang out with their friends. Many find upperclassmen friends, so they leave campus, and go to N.Y.C, boston, or hartford. It depends on what you are into mainly. remember you make up your own fun now. The campus can be a bit huge to freshmen, but you easily get used to it. Now it seems a bit on the crowded side. The dorms are a 50/50 shot. The good ones for the frosh are towers, northwest, and hilltop. The bad ones are north, east, buckley, and west. God forbid if you get west, i have heard of tales in which cockaroaches exist. creepy by all means. The food can be good for 1 month. The student union makes up for it. However the pizza here sucks compare to n.h pizza.:( uconn comes with the good and the bad. Remember that uconn has no control over the funding with the dorms. State money goes into funding construction and rennovation of these places. Thus it always entails that they choose the chepst. contractors over quality workmanship. Oh the sad beraucratic world.

To soccer_guy472, define bad? I mean there are people who never choose to party. Most of my friends love to hit the dance floor running at most parties. Some have taken up alcohol also, but some choose to abstain from it. I personally love to dance. i have heard of people smokin marijuana, but in no means is it comparable to wesleyan where pot hangs around freely. The bathrooms are pretty good, except at 9 in the morning, when there is no hot water left.

Freshman cant pick dorms right?

Is it true that the first 500 freshman who submit their housing survey gets Northwest?

How hard would you say is the process of changing roommates. I hear alot of stories where people dont get along with their roommate. Also, i am worried about how roommate assignments are made in chronological order based on the date the housing application is submitted.

linkinpark14....well on the weekends there are a variety of things to do. still, you'll be in storrs,ct...a good 20/25 from a good mall, club, or anything that isn't 100% uconn.
besides that every friday and saturday night there is the "Husky Howl," formerly known as "Late Night." Each weekend night has something different to offer (usually free stuff!) that can be fun. Our student union just got a movie theatre, so every thurs, fri, and sat you can see a recent film for only $2! besides that, im sure all of you know uconn is notorious for it's parties....some great, some awful. choose wisely.

rcherry....freshman CANNOT pick their dorms. however, im unsure as to the selection behind it....i personally wasn't placed in Northwest. I got East Campus my freshman year and in a triple! It was a big crowded at first, but in the end it worked out verrry well for all of us. So don't worry about where you get placed (honestly). Each complex has something great to offer. Seeing as I was an CA (RA) I can help you with ur last questions. Just dont worry about meeting your roommate and becoming situated. Trust me, it's a new experience that everyone has to go through! There will be things you will love about him/her, but at the same time im sure there will be things you may greatly dislike. From dealing with a variety of roommate conflicts there is one piece of advice, albeit cliche, that freshmen need to go in with: COMMUNICATION. if something is bothering you (i.e. your roommate is too loud, too late just let him/her know that in a civil manner). try to even compromise on some things! In the event that you are placed with someone that you ABSOLUTELY cannot live with you will have to wait a month from the beginning of school to make the change...just dont go in thinking ull need the change.

Finally there are a variety of things that determine where/when you are placed....are you in honors? did you submit your form on time? what were your specifications when you filled out the housing application form? residential life at uconn works very hard to help students get situated with a roommate that has some (generally) similarities.

So I have a buddy at Shippee right now...

and I'm aware of the recent... "incident" with the uh, bathrooms...

heh... kind of disturbing. Something to think about?

On a different but related note, is the rooming for Shippee random as well? I've heard the first floor suites are the nicest since they're taller and some have their own private bathrooms.

oh, nice :) some questions from a prospective freshman (uconn is most likely where i'll end up next year!)

your gpa is really high... was it hard getting/maintaining your 3.984? do many people have gpas that high?!

are the honors students all really crazy about studying and competitive and whatnot...

if you're an honors student are you a student of the HONOR college or of say, arts & science or the business school? can you take classes from any of the schools?

is shippee really remote from most of your classes/the main areas of uconn? i heard you have to bus to your classes?

do you really find being an honors student different from being a regular uconn student? i heard the only difference were priority housing and getting classes, and the honors seminars? what are the seminars like?

do you get a lot of hw/coursework to do?

ouch...haha what was your one A- in?

your gpa is really high... was it hard getting/maintaining your 3.984? do many people have gpas that high?!
um not many get 4.0s in college esp in majors like bio, chem, econ. or accounting. However it is doable. It is alot of work though, and realize that u only have 4 classes. one bad grade can pull ur gpa down really hard, and for each lower grade the gpa goes down very rapidly. here is the link.
http://uconnconnects.uconn.edu/calc_gpa.htm

are the honors students all really crazy about studying and competitive and whatnot
no, u still take regular classes, but u are req to take 2 honors classes throught ur frosh year. Also some of my honors freinds are the ones who really get drunk and party hard. U know wut they say work hard and party hard all the way.:)

if you're an honors student are you a student of the HONOR college or of say, arts & science or the business school? can you take classes from any of the schools?
U still have to declare a major, so say if your major falls within college of liberal arts and sciences, then you are an honors student within the c.l.a.s.

is shippee really remote from most of your classes/the main areas of uconn? i heard you have to bus to your classes?
sadly, that is the worst part of it all. also having suckley (buckley ) dining hall nearby dsnt help. some walk, but yeah it can be a bit remote.

you really find being an honors student different from being a regular uconn student? i heard the only difference were priority housing and getting classes, and the honors seminars? what are the seminars like?
not really, i mean u cant go around proj. i am an honors student and expect those around u to think highly of you. Many here are smart that are not in the honors program. perks of being in the prog. are living with higly mot. students and there isnt much noise in the dorms also. The honors classes are usually bit more interesting to take part in, and they go at a faster rate. english 250, honors equiv. of intro english, is where u write more papers and such.
- do you get a lot of hw/coursework to do?
honors classes tend to give more work.
hope that helped. good luck, and hope ur senior year goes well.

nyfan2rl, please explain the uhh...bathroom "incident"..

To PrEpErAdE:

how is the greek life at uconn?

wow....okay let me address a couple of the questions....

well first to the 3.984 GPAt that I've somehow maintained etc. it sounds kinda crazy but im actually trying to transfer out of uconn at the present moment (not for any reason, like it's bad or anything), but im not challenged enough.
was it hard to maintain my GPA? absolutely. my GPA is all A's and one stinking A-! lol. it's ok though. (and this is coming from a perfectionist). But I found it a bit difficult to keep it up there since for the past four semester I have taken a variety of courses. And no (I forget which poster said it), but I take over the limit/course load each semester. I take 18 credits each semester...why not? lol

honors students....hmm... from what ive seen it's like a school in itself. there are the honors students that will study 24/7 and even study on fri and saturday nights (YIKES!) and then those that dont give a crap and will skip classes and even forget when there midterms are....trust me...diversity within honors is a definite.
on a side note, just in relation to my GPA, etc. I go out every thurs, fri, and sat and still get those kind of grades! So advice to all freshman: Play hard, but work harder!

As an honors student i can take practically any course (including graduate courses if the professor grants me permission). Im CLAS, but I know honors students in all of the colleges.

Next question! Let me tell you the honest truth....shippee is in a fabulous location (esp. if you are a music or an arts major). It's so close to all of the humanities (which is where all of my classes ended up being).....either way, wherever you live you'll find that there are times when you can use the bus and not use it. It all depends on where your classes are.....just to get an idea go to students.uconn.edu and click on the interactive map and look at where everything is on the uconn campus!!

Being an honors student, in my own opinion, is great, but doesn't mean EVERYTHING. you are challenged more, yes. you get priority housing dates and class selection. You are recognized at graduation and all other small things... but be warned. Each honors student must take a variety of classes that are more challenging (much more is expected) and during senior year each honors student must write a thesis (not looking forward to that if i remain at uconn! lol)

Do I get a lot of hw/coursework? Well let me just tell you this.....I was one of those kids in hs that could do no hw and nothing outside of school and easily get an A in every course. In college, and at UConn specifically, that is not true. You will get a lot of READING (most) and papers (medium) and very few exams....the scary part is....most of the time you will only have 2 or three exams for your class! those 2/3 exams may even constitute 70% of your grade...meaning that if you mess up on one you might be screwed. :-/
Study hard!

rcherry: While Im not part of a frat, Ive heard the greek life at uconn is great! You should try to get involved as soon as you can if you are interested in it! There are a variety of frats/sor. that everyone can become involved in....some are the cliche movie style and some are honors fraternities.

ahh, thank you very much to both rmaindn and PrEpErAdE! you guys are AMAZINGLY helpful!

hi

i have a question about meal plans. while i know that each meal plan suits different people's need, which plan do you think is best?

CUSTOM
VALUE
ULTIMATE

thanks

After Northwest is filled where do they house freshman?

Are students that are not from Conn. fit in?

^ I was wondering the same but today a admission counselor came to my school and i ask her about Northwest and she told me that housing for freshman is random. They don't just fill up one complex and move on to the next.
