Current Student Taking Questions

Hey Board,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am a very involved student. I am more than willing to take any questions about anything. So feel free to ask on a thread, or to PM me.

Thanks for the offer. My S is thinking of applying and we drove through UConn last summer, but there was no tour available. His concerns are the " in the middle of no where" feel, and also the extent of an internationally diverse student body.
Initially he felt that it might be too big and he would feel lost. Any thoughts?

Well first and foremost, tours are definitely available. I would try to visit during the university academic year, so that you can get the feel of the campus.

I would say that yes, there is not as much diversity here as other top universities. However, this is definitely changing with the expansion of the honors program, the increasing prestige of UConn, and subsequently the applications from both academically superior and diverse students. I can only speak for myself, but my impression is that everyone finds their place.

As for being in the middle of nowhere, I would have to agree. This does not mean, however, that there is nothing to do. Many students enjoy the open, spacious atmosphere of the school, and different students groups, the undergraduate student government, and subog are always putting on events. In addition, there is a movie theatre, a real theatre, a ton of sporting events, and such. It should also be known that the “downtown project” is going to begin relatively soon, where the town in cooperation with others are literally building a college town. I’m not sure when this will be completed, though.

Downtown project is going to be completed in 2014.

Philosopher, thanks for making yourself available.
You’ve got mail.

Do you know where first year students can park? I know students are not allowed on campus parking until they are juniors, but I thought there was a field next to campus that a guy rents out? Do you know anything about that?

Yes, its called Farmer Browns. It is expensive, of course. Somewhere around 900 a semester I believe? Parking garages are also available for use, but I’m sure the aggregate of all the usage adds up too.

Honestly, in my opinion, there really isn’t any need for a freshman to have a car anyway.

Thanks for the reply! My daughter and her friend are both transferring and they are sophomores. Do you know how to get in touch with Farmer Brown or the garages? They are going to split the cost so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Sorry, but I have absolutely no idea. He is a private vendor. I would call Off-Campus Student Services to ask.

Just to point out, the lot isn’t exactly in the center of campus, so when the weather is bad… its bad.

"Academic Excellence Scholarship
One-Half Tuition Scholarship

Available to In-State and Out-of-State Applicants

Students who rank in the top 10 percent of their graduating class and who have achieved a high school grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) and minimum combined critical reading and math score of 1350 on the SAT or an ACT Composite score of 31 will be considered for an Academic Excellence Scholarship. Priority consideration will be given to students who apply for admission by December 1, 2008."

How many of these scholarships are given out? What % of students that meet the requirement are given the scholarship?

I don’t know if you would personally know, but maybe you know a finaid person at uconn that does?

Thanks, Philosopher for your help, much appreciated! Farmer Brown actually has a website so we’re all set. Not sure she’ll go with that but at least it’s an option.

JNE: To be honest, I have no idea. Honestly, if you email or call the financial aid office, I’m sure they would be more than happy to tell you. You don’t have to give your name if you don’t want to ;)
