what's it like?!

Hey everyone, i'm looking for someone that goes to/has graduated from uconn to answer some questions for me. before i apply, i want to know what it's like to go there.
anything you can tell me would be great, but heres some questions.
1) are you allowed to/is it easy to have a car on campus as a freshman?
2) are the people friendly/is it easy to make friends?
3) how's the food?
4) what's the party scene like/alcohol policy?
5) what's housing like?
6) are there alot of frats and sororities?

thank you so much!

Here is what I have gathered from asking the same questions; I want to go there next year, so I am not there now, but I am bored and fell like talking about college.
ThePhilosopher will probably correct me on some things.

1) (Not sure about this one) I car is a necessity becuase you are in the middle of nowhere. However, there are buses to and from major places. I think, but do not quote me on this, you can’t have a car as a freshman.

2) Yes and no. The answer is pretty much the same for any other college. Its how you want it to be. For the first week just talk to people on your floor. You also have to talk to your roommate, so there’s already one friend. Also, becuase Uconn is so big, there are many types of people there. I would say the people I saw there are relatively nice. I didnt see a group of kids who did not look down to earth and obnoxious, but there are kids like that in every college.

3) Compared to highschool, its better x10. I know in the co-op that the food is good (I personally have went there a couple of times already). My father said that his generation there had bad food, but I heard our generation seems a lot better.

4) The one thing I can assure you is that the party’s do not disappoint - if your into that. The alcohol level is significant at parties, especially spring weekend. With the lack of nightclubs and such, its really no surprise. However, I also heard there are a ton of more things to do than just drink and party. The policy, I heard, is that they do not arrest you if your drunk and underage, but if you have some on you, you get kicked out of the in-campus dorms, which means you get put on the in-campus waiting list, which notoriously also means you will not get on-campus dorming anymore.

5) Just from the tour, a 2 person freshmen dorm is pretty stereotypical. You get your desk, bed, and closet. So if you imagine a square room and your viewing it from above, the two beds are in the top left and right corners positioned vertically. If I remember correctly, these beds are raised and the desks are under them, or the desks are also positioned vertically at the end of the bed. The closet then follows after the desk.

6) There is a decent amount of frats and sororities.

Euro, I think you have a fair assessment. I believe there are individuals on this forum who have also experienced the campus, so I would encourage them to also comments on this. Some things to add:

Having a campus parking pass requires a certain number of credits, but I believe there are private parking locations as well. I would challenge you, tbach, to think about why you would need a vehicle on campus. If you are using it for a job, that is one thing. Otherwise, you will (presumably) be paying for gas, insurance, and parking, which may be unnecessary.

I would just add that there are over 350 student organizations at UConn, and you are bound to find a group of people who share your interests.

Glad to hear it!

No comment, except that you are not allowed alcohol in your dorm room if you are under 21, and even then there are restrictions.
