I am a prospective student for University of Richmond, and I'm trying to decide if I want to apply early decision or not. I loved the campus on my visit; it was beautiful and the programs Richmond offer are fantastic. However, I visited during finals weekend for Richmond so I didn't see many students. Living in Pennsylvania, it is hard to go down there again so I just wanted to ask some questions here. I have heard from other people that Richmond students are preppy and maybe a bit snobbish. Is this true??? Also, I love going on Friday nights to my school's football games and I value going to a university with school spirit. Would you find a lot of this at Richmond? Please be honest and thanks so much in advance.

should answer your questions. Let us know if you need more information!

We live in York County, PA. Our daughter comes home pretty regularily (we found some good routes other than I95!) She loves UR but everyone is different. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

our daughter is a junior at richmond and we have spent many weekends there over the past three years. I don’t find the kids very preppy, at least not compared to where our son goes to school, where he wouldn’t be caught dead in anything except Vineyard Vines I think the kids at Richmond are largely well dressed and upscale, but not “southern preppy” (not too many southern kids there). She is home this weekend and brought two friends from school (it’s fall break) and I have never seen a happier bunch of kids. They all love the school, classes, size, the city of Richmond, the proximity to great weekend trips like DC, etc. As for football, she’s not a big fan of football so she’s not to judge, but we went to a game over Parents’ Weekend and the crowd was very engaged!! It was a great game. Good luck! I would go and sit in on classes and spend the day there. You really don’t know how it feels until you do that. If you are going early decision, you owe it to yourself to know that Richmond is the right school for you. They will put together a great visit day… you can attend two classes, have lunch in the dining hall, and spend the day seeing how you feel about UR!

Hey cgstar. I, too, was a big Friday night football fan (among other sports) in high school and I’m big into school spirit. I would give Richmond a strong “C” rating in that dept. Sure, there was lots of support during March Madness, but in general, there is just not much Spider Spirit - or at least sustainable spirit! It hasn’t stopped my personal participation however, nor would I ever consider transferring because everything else is great! There have been recent efforts to rally more student attendance at the football games, but I haven’t seen much improvement yet (mass exodus at half time.) It’s too bad, because we have an awesome new stadium and some talented players! Granted my perception of school spirit is also swayed by my exposure to my brother’s school, Clemson. Now there is some serious spirit! I hope you decide to apply to Richmond. It truly has much to offer and we would love to have you join us in the student section to cheer on the Spiders! :)

Absolutely! Haven’t missed a home game yet, and even traveled to Duke to watch the Spiders beat the Blue Devils this season.
While student participation may not be what it could be, there is definitely a good, hardcore group of loyal fans. The Richmond Rowdies, our school’s spirit organization, also does a great job getting the spectators engaged!

hey cgstar, I just decided tonight that Im going to apply ED to Richmond! Im so excited I visted the campus two weeks ago and loved it. I want to major in international studies and probably do something with cultural anthropology or french. I read a lot of the same reviews about the sports and stuff too and possible lack of school spirit, but i know ill be at a lot of those games haha !!
