Were you a dedicated straight A student or did you slack off the first few years? What were ur strengths and weaknesses as a student? Was stony brook even your first choice for college?

Hi,
I come from a large specialized high school in NYC. I wouldn’t call myself a dedicated straight A student. I have a few B’s here and there. Although I go to a STEM school, I have struggled in Physics and Calculus. For instance, I got an 80 in Physics the first semester and worked hard to bring my grade to a 94 the second semester. Even though I prefer STEM over the humanities, my academic strengths include my writing and reading comprehension skills. I’m not a student that is involved in gazillion clubs, but dedicated myself to a few extracurricular activities.(part time job, president of a club, volunteer). Lastly, Stony Brook is one of my top choices. I am debating between SBU and another school.
I actually got a likely letter from them. I heard back around 4 days before the app deadline. I’m a straight A student with a bunch of EC and APs. This is one of my ballpark schools and I applied because I found it on a Best Value list for Environmental Science. I’m still waiting on the state and federal financial aid stuff to decide.
To anyone awaiting a response and seeking answers to this type of question, I was accepted to SBU for biology, so here’s my background:
I am an out-of-state resident. I attend a school with the IB program, and I am currently a DP candidate with a mix of IB and AP classes. I never slacked off and to this day have straight A’s throughout my high-school career and on the run for Salutatorian (valedictorian is VERY competitive at my school–last year’s had a 4.92 GPA!). I suppose my strengths could be my diligence and ability in the sciences, but my weakness is probably history and reading. Even though I read a bunch growing up, I’m just a slow reader. Now it may seem like a small thing, but with standardized testing relying on fast-paced reading, like the SAT or stimulus questions in history, this is still a very big problem for me.
NYU was my first choice college (it was a match school for me, and I have yet to receive a response), but it is very, very expensive, especially to out-of-state residents such as myself.
I’m not die-hard over the prestige of universities. I intend to go to med school, so as long as a university is decent and within my budget, I’m okay with it… but SBU is undoubtedly amazing for the sciences, so I am happy with my acceptance.
