Students:

I know two people that went to UCSB and transferred after their freshman year partly because they thought the students there were somewhat superficial and self-absorbed. Does this describe a typical student at UCSB or is that a false accusation?

If you don’t like the people at UCSB, I don’t know what to tell you. Those two people were probably lamesss:P

You’ll always find people that are superficial and self-absorbed anywhere you go; if a few people who are a bit ditsy cause you to transfer, you might as well be living in a cave, because no school is good for you.

Admittedly, with the stigma that UCSB tends to have (at least in NorCal), it would naturally attract more of those people, but I can say that a majority of the people I’ve met (if not all of them) aren’t superficial at all. A majority of us really pride ourselves on balancing our work and our education with our social life - which, I feel after my first year there, is a big part of what UCSB is about.

I fear that I’m not going to like it there. I didn’t exactly get a good impression on orientation

It’s kinda late now, buddy. ;]

That being said, you can always transfer out after completing your first year. You’ll just have to go through the application process again, except for transferring students as opposed to new applicants.

And you always have the option of dropping out and finding a job for a year before applying again, if you somehow find UCSB that insufferable.

If you don’t like some people at UCSB, you can always migrate to other people. It’s not that hard. I’m sure that most people will find others that they can enjoy.
