I really want to study abroad, but I have a mental disorder, and I am not sure I can handle it. Is it possible to do a short, summer abroad, and if I do well and can handle the stress, decide to go for fall too? (I would apply for summer and fall programs)...If I think I should come home, I could cancel my fall semester and just go back to my university. Does this sound illogical? I know I may lose a bit of money from application fees and whatnot, but is it possible? Do they refund some of the money?

I don’t think that is such a good plan… usually you have to get your study abroad lined up well ahead of time and follow through with it. You would also lose out on priority registration and housing at your home college. Why don’t you plan just one semester (fall)? If that goes really well, see if you can find a way to go back the next summer.

smart…thanks for the advice! although, the classes i will be taking, i doubt they will get full, my major is not popular at all

maybe i could go for a summer for a language program, and go back after one semester, like in Spring…maybe I could do that summer:abroad, fall:uni, Spring:abroad

I have seen summer programs for 8 weeks. But since you have a mental disorder, it is best to seek the counsel of your mental health provider.
