Study Abroad

So i heard "Midd has a great study abroad program". But how ultimately awesome is this "great"? I mean:

For a kid who's on financial aid for most of his fees, how does the financial aid transfer (or must he pay full by himself for such program? =_=!) and does it even help?

Can he actually pick any school to go on the study e.g. Cambridge university (and with that financial aid)?

And 3. Is it worth losing your hard-earned 2 years friends?

Thanks!

Farkula, what makes you think you’ll lose these “hard-earned” friends? They’ll probably be abroad too. You’ll have a perfect excuse to travel and visit these friends. I truly don’t mean any offense but some of your posts tend to be a bit negative. You’ve got a wonderful opportunity coming up over the next four years. Enjoy this time. Throw yourself into it wholeheartedly and you’ll come away with no regrets. I think you’re going to be surprised at how much fun you have.

Lol, you are right. Sorry for being pessimistic I guess, I just want to see some bad side to things (too many good reviews make me skeptical) given that I’m too deeply in love with the school already. Anyway, thanks!

I know that a friend of my student from the freshman dorm, was on financial aid and studied in England and in China. I am not sure how the finances were arranged, but it is definitely possible.
Also, to add to Urban’s comments. When my student studied abroad, he saw a few of his friends from his freshman dorm, in his host country and in their host country. You will not lose any friends, only enhance your educational experience! You also will make many new friends.

Midd bases your aid on the cost of your study abroad program, including travel cost. So our family is expected to pay the same total amount as before. Both our sons are traveling this fall, and are very excited. Many of their friends are going away for a semester, and some for a year. It’s another great part of the college experience.

And you can pick any program-one S is going to a Midd program in Asia, the other to a program run by another college in Australia.

Financial aid “travels” with students for Middlebury programs (in 35+ sites now), and a few–a small number of–programs not run by Middlebury. You should check the website or call the Office of off-campus study. Options are great, but aid does not travel to all programs.
