Can anyone tell me about the study abroad policies and programs at Minnesota? How many years are you allowed to study abroad, if you're say.. an International Relations major? Are the programs high in quality? Are the policies flexible? Tell me anything you can!

yea i just went on a tour of the school, and carlson yesterday (its jaw dropping lol) and and a business major, we are now required to study abroad at some point, and they told us that we can do it as many times as we like, whenever we like. you can do it as soon as freshman year. there are 60 places to choose from, as they told us MN has the largest study abroad program. You can either go for a 2 week program, where you will just focus on one class that whole time, or you can do a whole semester and take the usual number of classes. they said that 1 outta every 3 kids gets a full scholarship to study abroad, and they were telling us even if you dont, you can apply for many grants and what not and pretty much get it payed for. the kids telling us this were seniors who had done so like 3 or 4 times lol.

hope i helped =P n wher u think youd be interested in studying btw?

hope i helped lol

I’m a student at the U of M and I have studied abroad and know a thing or two about the Global Studies major, and I’d be happy to offer my input. The U of M is excellent for studying abroad!

The U offers many different types of programs, so you’ll undoubtedly find something you like. One popular option is the “Global Seminar.”

Global Seminars are 3 weeks in duration, during either the Winter Break or May Term. They are put together and led by 1 faculty member, and you travel with a group of 20 or 30 students, almost all of whom will be from the U. This program is open to anyone, freshmen through senior, and most do not have major/minor or language pre-reqs. Off the top of my head, I can think of Global Seminars to Italy, France, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, China, and Germany. There are definitely more, and new trips pop up all the time, because any faculty member can design a trip and submit it to the Learning Abroad Center.

You can also choose trips that span the Summer Session, either Fall or Spring Semester, or you can spend an entire Academic Year abroad. The U has programs that go basically everywhere, and offer all sorts of different experiences. You can go to big cities or small cities on every continent (save Antarctica, I suppose). You can study at a university abroad and be immersed in the local language, or you can take classes entirely in English. Some programs include volunteer work and internships. As is typical just about anywhere, programs have the option of living in dorms on another university’s campus, living on your own in an apartment, or doing a homestay.

Concerning how many years you want to spend abroad, the question really depends on how soon you want to graduate. With the way the U structures its programs, you can complete Lib Eds and Major/Minor requirements abroad. But, you can’t do everything abroad. If your goal is to graduate in 4 years and your only degree is a Global Studies Major, I’d estimate you can spend 1 1/2 years abroad during the academic year. Now, you can throw in as many Global Seminars and Summer Sessions as you like, but they can get costly after awhile!

Anyhow, hope that helps. Feel free to ask any questions! And, don’t just take my word for it.
Thank you so much, you two! Very helpful.

APineiro, is it really true that you can study abroad as many times as you like? So if I wanted to, I could study abroad for 3 out of 4 years? Oh and I’m not sure where I would want to study abroad yet, but I know that I want to.

yea well as undergrad13 mentioned lol, you cant do like 3 full years of study overseas, but yea if you wanted to do like one study abroad semester for liek freshman, junior, and senior year, you could. one of the tour guides helping us out said he had gone to peru, sweden, and argentina, and another went to like china and mexico. its cool as hell lol i think id go to like belgium or switzerland or sumthin
