Good idea or bad idea? How will it affect college admissions?

Do any of you guys take it? Whenever I look at the schedule threads on here, I rarely ever see anyone take it.

my school doesn’t even offer it.

For me, study hall is mandatory for all freshman and sophomore, regardless of your grades (we have a 8 period schedule, so we have a “normal” load of 7 w/ study hall).

I think I’ll continue taking study hall in Junior and Senior years though.

I like study hall it gives me more times for hw

If you want to take a study hall take one. It will give you time to study for tests, do homework, or just chill for a period. Colleges won’t care if you take a study hall; infact at my school almost all of the competitive seniors are taking study hall.

Most students don’t use study hall wisely. They waste time either in the classroom or in the library. There is one academic study hall (science) that has students from every level of practically every science class to get help from each other and the teacher.

lol study hall

why would colleges like study hall, use your common sense

I opted out of Study Hall for my senior year, but I do have Late In, so I can come to school an hour late, so I don’t really need a Study Hall.

not to mention, my GPA is slipping, so I’m really stacking on the AP courses next year…

it all depends on how rigorous you want your schedule to be :)

It’s near impossible at my school not to have a study hall, since there are no classes that take up such a small number of credit hours. It’s not like you can do anything about it. Even when I’ll have 7 APs scheduled, I’ll still have one period during the six-day cycle during which I’ll have study hall. Colleges won’t like you based on how many study halls you take. They only look at your academic classes and electives - not requirements.

Oh, we have to have free periods (same thing?)- it’s just worked into our schedule. Since there are people like me whose schools provide them with two frees a week, I don’t think colleges are really going to care. It shows that you know you need some downtime.

lol why would colleges like you, use your common sense

We have what is called X-Period, kind of like study hall, every other day, where students can go to different teachers for tutoring, making up tests/quizzes, whatever.

I have a year long study hall this year. Senior year. But, officially, I’m a student helper during my study hall. That just means that rather than being dominated by study hall teachers who, no matter how nice they are to their real students, are hateful in study hall I get to talk and text on my cell phone, wander around the school, take naps, participate in food days, and go outside with the spoiled Calc BC Honors class. All in exchange for rinsing wet-erase marker off of transparencies every few days!

Study hall is nigh unavoidable in my school. There are a bunch of semester long required classes: 7th grade gym, 8th grade gym, 2 semesters of HS gym, junior high health, senior high health, public speaking. And, AP sciences except EnviSci are 2 bells every other day, so they usually go along with a study hall. AP Bio always does, and for the vast majority of people, so do AP Phys, B or C, and AP Chem.

Why don’t you just get a free period?

Study Hall is standard in my school. You can opt out study hall though. Many people take an extra class.

But during senior year, most people do study hall. I’m a junior and our #1 has a year round SH. Our #1 senior plays pokemon in his SH now…
