Hi,

I am hoping to study abroad in Vienna, Austria Spring 2015.
The program gives me an opportunity to do a supervised teaching of English into a Viennese school, which would be an amazing experience (I want to become a teacher)

But I feel as though that since Vienna is not a very popular study abroad location, does that mean that going to Vienna would not be such a good idea?

I can’t answer as relates to specifics of study abroad, but Vienna is an amazing city with a lot to offer. I spent some time there, living with a local when I was in my early 20s and LOVED it. The people were friendly, appreciate if you make any effort to speak German, and were generally pretty helpful (except wait staff in restaurants – that was a little more iffy, and I think it may be a cultural thing in German speaking countries – wait service is just not a big deal to them, but it’s no where near as challenging as Italy in that regard. Germans are about efficiency.) It is a an easy city to get about on foot, and the ring structure of the roads is interesting. There is a lot to see in the city itself, and in the general area if you have transportation. Gemutlichkeit is fun too, but I found it more in the countryside than the city proper. (Gemutlichkeit is the concept of all are welcome – so in restaurants you will be seated at a large table with other patrons that you dont know. It seems strange at first, but is actually a really wonderful tradition and great if you are trying to learn about the culture and people.

Good luck!

I agree with Petra. Vienna is phenomenal, a gateway to EUropean culture and politics. It is a plus that it is not such a big destination for visiting students (though there are a lot of foreign students there), as you will get more of the local culture. YOu are on the verge of a great adventure.

If you have any questions - I may be able to answer. I’m moving to Vienna in June, and have been numerous times.

I went abroad to a less popular destination (Copenhagen) and it was amazing. I made great friends with the few Americans there etc…
