What film options are there for students at USC who don't get into SCA?

Hi curious,

There are a few film classes open to all students as a GE. Also, anyone can minor in film. Finally, there is the BCA. It is a joint major between the business school and the film school, but you apply through Marshall. It is pretty competitive – only about 50 kids are accepted and it is a 4 year program, so you have to get in as a freshman.

Thanks, good to know. Have you heard much about the narrative studies major? And do you know what the application to the business/film program entails? If I weren’t accepted to SCA this spring would it be possible for me to apply to the business/film program? Or would the timing not work out? Sorry for bombarding you with questions!

Along the same line…how hard is it to catch up if transferring from Dornsife to SCA?
Also, are there Dornsife classes I could take that would enhance an SCA application?

Curious,

In order to apply for the BCA, you have to first be accepted to Marshall. I have heard that they are opening up Spring admissions to the BCA, though. The thing is, like the screen writing major, it is a 4 year program. You can’t transfer into it – unless you’re willing to start from scratch. Are you a transfer or a freshman?

Anyway, one of the best ways to get into the BCA is to get into the Global Leadership Program – they have priority. But I think the GLP is by invite only. (I could be wrong.)

IDK anything about the narrative studies. Is that the critical studies class? If so, I have heard that is a bit easier to get into and you don’t need to wait until your junior year to transfer. You can apply right away.

letmein,

IDK how hard it would be to catch up. but there are film classes you can take which fulfil the GE requirements and also count toward the major. You could take them, which would keep you caught up if you get in. Also, if you make a good impression on the professor, you might ask him to write one of your recommendations. That would certainly give you an edge.

Is it possible to major in critical studies and get a bachelor’s degree then apply to the masters program for production? or is a bachelor’s degree in production required for that masters?

letmein18, the UG majors are pretty unrelated to getting into the film masters program. Any student with any UG major may apply to USC’s graduate film program. I know a guy who first went all the way through med school got his M.D. and then decided to get a masters at USC SCA. In some ways the grad film production program would sort of repeat the UG experience, in that both programs are designed to give students the opportunities to get films under their belts, develop projects, get internships and meet mentors–only at different stages in ages/development. I don’t think I’ve heard of many who get an UG degree in production and go on to further degrees.

In fact, you can work in the film industry without any college degree at all. The important thing is making films, learning from your past projects to move your technique, expertise, and cinematic vision forward, and make necessary industry contacts, with a great reel to show what you can do.

Thank you so much! I’m pretty undecided about my major but I’m trying to figure out what all of my options are based on my current interests so I really appreciate your info!
