Stuff CCers say

To start with a few...

-I might end with an A- in gym this semester. Although the rest of my grades are A+s, will I still have a chance at Harvard?
-Should I retake a 2330?
-I self-studied 7 APs this year. Is that enough for Harvard?
-What are some ECs I could do to impress colleges?
-I have erectile dysfunction. Will this be a unique essay topic?
-I only shower once a month. Will colleges consider this unique and count it as a hook?
-I'm in 7th grade, can someone critique my detailed 5-page plan for high school?
-I got rejected from Harvard, and ONLY accepted into Penn, Cornell, and Duke. Is my life ruined?
-Can someone help me feel better after a brutal rejection? I received a rejection from Harvard today, but acceptance letters from Stanford and Princeton. Although Stanford and Princeton are DECENT schools, my heart was really set on Harvard.
-Your chances at Harvard are very strong. Your ECs demonstrate a good amount of passion while your stellar academics will definitely get you past most applicants. In addition, it seems like your passions are quite uncommon so that could be a boost in admissions. CHANCE ME BACK FOR HARVARD!?!?!?!?
-in a "chance me" thread Essays: Amazing. Teacher recs: Glowing

In chance threads:

Those ECs are weak.

Your GPA is way too low.

You have no chance at (insert ivy/Stanford here).

–I took (insert regular class in here) but that’s all my school offered.
–I don’t start studying for (insertAP exam) until a week before and I got a 5.
–Those aren’t even hard AP classes.
–When I was in your grade I’d already taken 7 AP classes.
–You won’t get into (Ivy school) with that GPA.

-How do I make friends?
-What is it like to have friends
-Top 5% class rank? Pathetic, don’t even think about applying to the Ivies
-Colleges will consider Low GPA/high SAT students nothing but lazy slackers while they consider high GPA/low SAT students hard workers who just happen to be “bad test takers” (said by parents)
-My “darling” son/daughter is the captain of 3 varsity teams, president of 5 clubs, founder of a charity that raised $300,000 in a year, an excellent student with 4.0 GPA/2300 SAT, and a world class pianist. He/she’s extremely kind-hearted, caring, funny, and attractive. Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, etc all begged him/her to attend. Blah blah brag brag brag

“You need to work on your 3.88 Un-weighted GPA”

“State schools suck”

The one with the parent is so true…sometimes I’m like **** woman…
“Should I take 6 AP classes?”
“What summer internship is better?”

-Is 7 AP class hard enough?
-I got a 3.8 and I wonder if I can get into Harvard.
-(rating a schedule that only got 3 AP classes) I would give it a 5 because you could do better. It doesn’t seem like much.

Boy I’ll tell you, some of the folks on make me wanna slap some sense into them. I mean you would rate a schedule with no AP like 3/10 when yet the classes on that schedule are ones that few high school offer? Too many people here are high college level freaks (on offense) but we need a sort of balance.

Oh, my favorite: “If you have a high GPA and low test scores, you’re high school is easy and your grades are inflated.”

Low test scores may mean you didn’t study for those tests. High GPA mean you at least work for it. So it a 50/50 shot imo.

"^ What is incorrect about that? Unless that person is an incredibly hard worker, that’s a true statement. "

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN be a hard worker and be very intelligent and not do well on the SAT “reasoning” test. There are lots of hard workers in this country. If one does not do well on 1 test, they make up for it by working very hard to get a very good place in their class an an excellent GPA.

That’s pretty much always true though. The “bad test taker” excuse is BS in my opinion and will never fly. How can someone ace TESTS in school and get a 4.0 GPA and suddenly switch off when taking standardized tests like the SAT? Plus, not studying for standardized tests isn’t an excuse for low test scores; that’s like saying not studying for school is a legitimate excuse for a low GPA.

Anyway, here’s some more:

-How prestigious is X University?
-How does the prestige of X University compare to that of Y University?
-How hot are the guys/girls at X University?
-(in response to the above question) Why are kids so shallow these days? Why would you want the attractiveness of the student body to be considered when choosing a college? Personality > looks any day. And oh btw I’m lecturing you on being shallow only because I’m fugly.
-You have a low GPA and high SAT. Colleges will think you’re a super slacker and you will never get into a selective school <— got this so much when I was applying for colleges lol

@waitlistftl: What you just said count toward “Stuff CCers say”. Ok not studying for school IS an excuse for low low GPA score. People do get too cocky with a high GPA and actually decide “You know what I can ace this test without studying.” Please explain your logic: Are you saying not studying is NOT one of the causes of low GPA and test scores?

What I was trying to say is that not studying is not a legitimate excuse for low GPA/SAT. I’ve seen people try to use the “I didn’t study” excuse for low SAT scores and act like colleges will actually give them a free pass for low scores. Of course in reality, everyone who received low scores/grades because of lack of studying will be penalized in admissions.

Generic reply in chance threads:
“Uh I’m not totally sure but I think you have a 43% chance of getting into _____. Plz chance me back”

Every time I see something like that, I laugh because (1) they don’t know what they’re talking about but still put a specific number down, (2) they’re desperate to hear feedback from people who equally have no idea what they’re doing, and (3) they seriously can’t know what they’re talking about most of the time since they want chances back.

“How can someone ace TESTS in school and get a 4.0 GPA and suddenly switch off when taking standardized tests like the SAT?”

Because in school, you’re testing on specific subjects and material, and then tested at the end on your cumulative knowledge on the subject, like you will be in college. You can ace tests because its much easier to study and actually know what you are required to learn and regurgitate back on an answer sheet.

You DON’T know whats going to be asked of you on the SAT until you’re sitting there taking it. Studying can only get you so far before luck kicks in based on what kind of questions you get and if you know how to do those or not.

Lmao, this is hilarious. The first post made my day.

you should be able to handle a few more APs… Try self-studying human geography/psych/statistics/etc. I started self studying all those the night before and still got a five.

I got a b on my report card. What method of suicide is most painless?

will you rate my schedule?

does Harvard or Princeton have a better summer program?

state schools are my safety but I think I’d be too ashamed to ho to any of them.

help, I made a minor infraction in xyz important class. Will this ruin all my chances at getting into a decent school?

i am so desperate for good grades I cheated. I got caught. Now what?

ha, I only get four hours of sleep a night therefore I try harder than you.

I am incredibly ashamed of my 2000 sat score.

Edit: after seeing others take offense at a previous post, don’t take anything I said too seriously …, it’s all in good fun.

Rusty84, not all of us can be as perfect as you … Have fun ten years from now when nobody cares about sat scores
