Stuff CCers say

The SAT is not a measure of pure intelligence, but an increase in intelligence as measured by an IQ score correlates with a higher SAT score. Does this mean that a 2400 scorer is an absolute genius? No, not for sure, but there is a good chance that the 2400 scorer is pretty freakin smart.

@dfree it’s all just a matter of opinion to me.
Not you rusty, anyway let get back on topic here.
-I got a 2350 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT, which score do I send?
-GPA is not a (good) measure of intelligent.
-Chance me and I’ll chance back!

-bump

Yea, it is a matter of opinion. I don’t consider an 1800 impressive, k?

What if I do see someone that is dumb and got a 2200+ score just because he’s a good guesser? Then what?

And I was only responding to a post about how dumb people do poorly and smart people do well.

College student in this b1tch. Gpa doesn’t indicate anything because most high schools are different. College will indicate how well you can think and perform for the real world. I know plenty of people including myself who are doing better in college…

Brb 3.65 gpa after hs graduation but just got a 3.93 second semester at a top 20 business school

Then that person is not only dumb, but exceptionally lucky.

If someone gets a 2200 what is the chance that the person is smart? The chance is high.

If someone gets a 2200 what is the chance that the person is dumb but is a lucky guesser (there is no such thing as a good guesser)? The chance is low.

Because of these chances, the generalization can be made that a 2200er is smart, because the chance that the person who got a 2200 got it through intelligence is high.

Me thinks you are just mad about a low SAT score, Descuff.

Ok… Mr. (or Ms.) college student, perhaps you can explain to me your own thoughts as to why GPA doesn’t indicate anything?

Because it has so many flaws.

One could easily get a 4.0 by taking the easiest classes their school offers.

Also you have kids who go home and memorize their teacher’s notes (yes, the teacher’s, not the student’s), ace the test, then proceed to forget everything they “learned” because all they care about is a good grade on the test. They’ll get A’s, have a 4.0, but will have learned nothing. They must be really smart, right?

That one point. But what if the same person took all the hardest classes and got a 4.0 GPA, English doesn’t uses notes, Science and Math require use of formula and concept, and other classes like Orch/Band or classes like Auto Shop/ Wooden shop doesn’t require teacher notes.
@dfree: I hadn’t taken the SAT yet.

Many high schools have a different difficulty of the same classes. There are blow off classes, grade inflation, etc. Students will not take a class if they can’t get a good grade in it. GPA does not indicate intelligence to the slightest degree. It indicates your work ethic or ability to work the system.

Edit: I also agree with Yankee.

Then what does indicate intelligence? If not the GPA, SAT, ACT, Standardized tests, IQ test; then what?

University, when you’re exposed to real life concepts, strict rules and guidelines, and a far harsher difficulty of course load. It’s not too easy to get an A if a class required for your major has a majority B distribution, 1 allowed absence before your grade is affected, and a professor who might not even know what you look like. No sympathy points or help unless you physically go to office hours as well.

^You sir, are by far the best person I heard on HSL.

You know what, all of you debating over SAT or GPA determining intelligence sound pretty dumb. Anyone who believes that a number or a letter grade is testament to how much knowledge a person has aquired though experience and learning has not been exposed to the real world.

I appreciate the compliment. Intelligence simply isn’t smarts. It’s defined as “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills”. I’d say that hits the nail on the head with university.

@mystical
Because transferable skills learned from college and internships at fortune 500 corporations don’t translate to the real world…

Could not agree more… Some of the smartest people I know have gotten ‘low’ SAT or ACT scores…

CCer: "The mother of my great great grandmother was married to a man who was related to an African American woman. Therefore, Is it okay if I check “black” on my college apps? "

^ Haha, I like it! :D

"My stats are TERRIBLE… my life is ruined because I can’t get into the Ivies

–later in the thread–

my stats are: 2400 SAT, 3.9 GPA, 10 APs, 800s on several SAT IIs…"

^Actual thread
